Evan A. James presents Swell as a work balanced between the contrasting concepts of expanse and containment. The listening experience is like riding in a car along snowy roads late into the night. “A Small House In The Woods” wanders its way through a desolate soundscape of rising and falling echoes as sounds bend and waiver before entering back into bubbling white noise. Meanwhile, “Lifted/Tunneling Lights” opens with a thin line growing into a lush scene before decaying into static. Each tone feels as though it was deliberately placed to contrast the wilderness at its climax. However, though it may conjure images of wild freedom, Swell is not foreboding. Rather, its presentation is exploratory, with James as our guide. Take solace in the knowledge that despite the surface of noise, there is always a structure sitting below.
