In the third and final instalment of Stetson’s New History Warfare trilogy, we’re once again treated to the sounds of a master at work. Intricate arpeggios mutate into drones that shift into rhythms seamlessly. Atmospheres ebb and flow. With just his saxophones recorded without the use of overdubs, except for vocals on four tracks from Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Stetson’s circular breathing and the clacking of keys become beds of percussion. Thick clouds gather. The feedback-like swells of “High Above a Grey Green Sea” and heavy growl of “Brute” have him wearing his black metal influences on his sleeve. The centrepiece 15-minute epic “To See More Light” sounds like the piece that could define a life’s work. Winds calm, sunbeams part the clouds. A re-imagining of Washington Phillips’ “What Are They Doing In Heaven Today?” serves as an illuminated denouement to the bombastic climax. This is Nature’s power, scale, and beauty rendered in song.
