Review :: Brazilian Money – Friendly Neighbor EP

Brazilian Money - Friendly Neighbor EP Brazilian Money
Friendly Neighbor EP
(Self Released)
Edmonton, AB
::web/sounds::

From the flat-broke pockets of Aaron Levin:
The immense planning that entailed Wyrd Fest resulted in a deep, sexual relationship between myself and Wicked Awesomes! guitar-player Tyler. During one of our many Magic-ticket-making missives, he looked in my eyes and whispered: “Aaron, have you heard our bass player’s solo project?” That was my first foray into the wildly contagious world of Brazilian Money. Fast-forward a month and I finally have some “official” recordings. It was sudden impact: vocalist-and-everything-else-as-well Garret’s grizzled nasal, his omnifarious pop-filtrations, and the swampy sensations ensnaring every ear-movement. I was knocked-out, surprised and excited by the EP’s stranglehold. Thankfully, with every listen came newly rewarding energies. A recommended soundtrack for the shower (replacing my current shower favorite: Mobb Deep’s Tha Infamous). Sing along and get clean, mayne.

Video :: Aaron Levin & The Wicked Awesomes! on Breakfast Television

In preparation for Wyrd Fest I was lucky enough to snag a 90 second interview on Breakfast Television (City TV, Cable 7) about the festival followed by a performance by one of my favorite bands in Alberta, The Wicked Awesomes!.

It was a weird experience being on television. I was kind of disappointed they didn’t put makeup on me. I hope I looked sexy in HD.

Promotions :: WYRD FEST

Yes, Edmonton finally got its first underground music festival. It’s starting out small, with just 16 bands in one evening across two-stages, but I’m sure Wyrd Fest will become the revenue generating, gold-tank driving, investment masterpiece of Obey Convention, Sled Island, and Pop Montreal in no time!

In the meantime, see the full details here: WYRD FEST

Promotion :: Sat. Sept 5 :: Wicked Awesomes! LP Release! At Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes

For international readers, this post will be totally irrelevant. Except for the following: I am sick and I just got back from the world’s second-largest mall, which means I’m stressed out and angry. I spent $50 on a pair of pants because I got a new job. Ridiculous.

For Edmonton readers, I’d like to remind you that on Saturday September 5th Weird Canada will be presenting the The Wicked Awesomes!’s LP release party at Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes. Music and bowling.

Weird Canada Presents

The Wicked Awesomes! “Punk Holograms” LP Release Party!!!

… WITH …

The Wicked Awesomes! (Edmonton, AB)
Myelin Sheaths (Lethbridge, AB)
Moby Dicks (Lethbridge, AB)
Grown-Ups (Calgary, AB)

Come down to Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes for the one-night-only extravaganza of the year. “Punk Holograms,” the debut LP by Edmonton’s uber-weirdos The Wicked Awesomes! is sure to be the most talked about record from Edmonton this year. And they’ll be coming back from a North American tour that received a huge amount of press, including a glowing review on the Brooklyn Vegan blog!

Joining The Wicked Awesomes will be a weird-punk invasion from Lethbridge and Calgary. We have the Myelin Sheaths, who devastated crowds at the Sled Island Music Festival and will be releasing a 7″ on the fabled HoZac Records label (home to Smith Westerns, Blank Dogs, Nobunny, Nothing People, and a host of other underground talent). Tagging along will be the Moby Dicks, whose weird lo-fi garage is sure to turn the heads of folks fortunate enough to catch them now (before they explode – KABOOM!). And coming up from Calgary will be this unknown band Grown-Ups whose MySpace I loved so much I asked them to drive all they way to Edmonton for this show!

***BONNIE DOON BOWLING LANES ::: LOCATED AT 85 st. and 82 ave.(in the bonnie doon shopping mall)****

Yes, the event will take place at Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes! This is fantastic. Not only does the venue serve beer but it’s ALL AGES as well! The lanes will be open all night, so there will also be a BOWLING COMPETITION!! Win radical stuff!

And now for the bands!

The Pizza Box-Set Volume 1: The Cadavers

The Pizza Box-Set Volume 1: The Cadavers - Autopsy Turvy The Cadavers
Autopsy Turvy
(Self Released)
Edmonton, AB
::web/sounds::

For the first installment of the Pizza Box-Set we will go back into the lives of Lucas Wilfred Finnamore-Gochgarian and Thomas Gaudin (synth player and singer of The Wicked Awesomes! respectively). The Cadavers provide true, fossilized evidence of The Wicked Awesomes!’s frankenstein-esque mashery of gothic surf-punk and Black Lipsian garage. Joining Thomas and Lucas in The Cadavers are two bros named Chad and Liam (I have no idea who they are – but I’m sure they’re wonderful). Thomas shows considerable promise as a singer, and indeed his work with The Wicked Awesomes! proves this. On the other hand, Lucas shows considerable promise as an exceptionally creative person, which he certainly is. They have a song called 9-Day Rat-Stache and as a soon-to-be 28 year-old who cannot grow facial hair, the song resonates very strongly with me. Long live the Pizza Box-Set.

Turbo future.

The Wicked Awesomes - Punk Holograms The Wicked Awesomes!
Punk Holograms
(Psychic Handshake)
Edmonton, AB
::web/sounds::

NBA Jam for the Sega Genesis was the second most punk sports game ever (the Mutant League series taking number uno). If you got three dunks in a row some dude yelled out “HE’S ON FIIIIIRE” and you burst into flames and did quad-flip slam-dunks. Weird dunks. Now imagine that basketball player is on fire, wearing fluorescent Nike’s covered in time-shit and crystal-snot, death sunglasses, an 80GB ipod, hens teeth, and a jersey from Nowheresville, Ghost Beach. Take a ramshackle of insane kids in the remote recesses of Edmonton’s hoodlets and have them dedicate an album to this space-streaming-intelligent basketball player and you might come close to the brilliance of The Wicked Awesomes!’s LP debut Punk Holograms. The album lacks any pretense and obeys no boundaries; from burnt puke-garage to psychedelic mizrahi-surf, the red-lights on your stereo will burst with wrecked synth-lines and skirt-chasing guitar-riffery. It’s a beautiful pawnshop display-case of wastoid-punk. Brilliant. Amazing. Fantastic. Wicked. Awesome. A sure-shot contender for best album of 2009 on any continent.
