New Canadiana :: Tonstartssbandht – Sinkhole Storm and Sandwich

Two brotherly blazing long-form jams. Sinkhole Storm and Sandwich finds trashcan twang and dirty tremolo swells surfing atop monster waves of endless pulsing momentum. Amps cranked so far beyond breaking point, it’s a miracle such scorching tones didn’t eat right through the four-track tape. “Hotel For Gods” cools off from the acid heat wave with a steady, heady mixture of opaque synth and guitar ripples. A lasting, slow burning summer haze, and real tonal sludge.

New Canadiana :: Parallel Pyres – Corrugated City

Moving past his Casio-panoramic persona like a snake shedding its skin, the rhythmic heartbeat of Hot & Cold drifts into a holier plane with his latest CD-R. Re-animating Bo and maybe even Booker, Corrugated City brings blues and spiritual idioms into a haunted future-past of drum machines, fuzz organ and squealing six-string freak-outs. Who do you love?

New Canadiana :: Velvet Chrome – Stone

Francesco and Jane’s signature damaged tones and heady psychedelic vibes are the perfect soundtrack to the rabbit hole. Stoned time warps and tribal drumming aim straight at your third eye and score – it’s direct communication deeply achieved through a murky, passively haunting wall of psych-noise. Can’t ask for much more, it’s their best one yet, and possibly one of my favorite tapes.

New Canadiana :: Various Artists – Bloodstains Across Ontario

Mammoth Cave’s tribute to my recently adopted province and the third entry in its Bloodstains series is a rapid-fire bombardment of ON’s finest hook-smugglers. Like speed dating at Gaga Weekend. it’s a blur of faces young and old that spins by before you can decide if they’re a creeper or a keeper. From the scummy sugar rush of Strange Attractors to White Wires’ pogo-punk and the starry eyed twee of Peach Kelli Pop, side A spills over with jams. The flip sees Young Guv channel his inner Ric Ocasek, Slim Twig sprout up twice with shred-heavy side-project Tropics, and the unreleased cut from Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet jolt from idyllic to jugular-ripping. Of course, Tonetta steals the show with effortless elevator sleaze, urging Toronto residents to “clean it up, yeah, all the shit.” Wooly bully bang for the buck grip.

New Canadiana :: Rebecca’s Room – The Burned CD II

With wild strokes of coloured psychedelia, Rebecca’s Room return with another lazer-graphed tome brimming with pop-lysergia. Languishing within their popular bedlam, the bedroom-laced mono-pop sizzles with uncanny waves of Eastern abandon; Dylonian moves displaced by a wicked array of tabla pounding beneath the devil’s anvil. A ridiculously curious leap forward for the New Waterford native. Deft grippage, please.

New Canadiana :: JLK- Empty Spaces

JLK gets downright medieval on her latest cassette. Looping and layering wraithlike vocals with skin-flaying scraps of sandpaper guitar, she re-assembles each piece to create Burroughs-style cut-ups. The XX chromosome of Velvet Chrome has unveiled a sui generis sound in her fittingly desolate shreddery, akin to driving alone on a cactus-lined highway. Shedding genres like snake skins without stopping to gaze at ghosts of artists past, she leaves it all in the rear-view while plotting her next move. GRRRRRIIIIIPPPPP…

New Canadiana :: Feral Children – Reverb b/w Ancient Videotape

If you’ve ever seen Ryan Davidson (a.k.a. Feral Children) perform, you’ve watched the life cycle of a cosmic organism; layers upon layers of unsullied resonance and yearning psychedelic beauty. Now surrounded by a trio of musicians, Davidson has a freshly decadent invitation to discovery. A-side “Reverb” (re: BANGER) sublimates into a driving, noisy cluster of Britannian modernity. “Ancient Videotape” is a slow, virgin treasure awash on vespertine beaches — submerged, languished and innocent. The very first (of hopefully many more) releases from Saskatoon’s Leaning Trees Records

New Canadiana :: Holy Cobras – Forever

Ottawa mutants Holy Cobras’ first LP is a stacked heap of sharp acid tones and sweaty rowdiness. Amidst their signature psychedelic mess of shredded samples and blazed electronics, the Cobras lay down 11 cuts of ear-blasting, drum-bashing goodness. As with any previous release in their immaculately scuzzy discography, Forever is a total must-grip for all Chrome fans and/or any 9-5 folks in need of wasting a few neurons.

New Canadiana :: Andy Boay – Born to Fully

The sibling super-duo Tonstartssbandht are a certified favourite within the Weird Canadian cosmos. With their prolific writing style and consistently murderous jams, it comes as little surprise that brother Andy’s solo release is such a wild listen. The blistering guitar and echoing vocals may strike a familiar chord with Tonstartssbandht fans, but the lack of driving percussion gives these songs room to sprawl all the way out into full-on psych territory. Grip and bliss out.

New Canadiana :: Hobo Cubes – Aerial Nocturnes

Hobo head honcho Frank Ouellette has stepped up production as of late, even by his own inexhaustible standards. This cassette for the mighty Digitalis finds him drifting through retro-future synth modes, tickling plastic through a series of otherworldly paeans to the Kosmische Musik forefathers. Traversing time (“Through The Ages”), space (“Hybrid Nebula”) and sea (“Skylab (Aqua Overview)”), Aerial Nocturnes hits its apex on the eight-minute “Stone Pegasus”, a softly undulating underwater blissando complete with seagulls cooing in the distance. Grip, turn on, tune in, drop out.
