New Canadiana :: Peace – My Face

Huge late-pass on this beast of an LP from Edmonton ex-patriots Peace. Soaring wickedly within rippling bass-lines and jagged guitar wrenching, My Face bursts through every three-minute pop monopoly. Drawing their anthemic, addictive wave-wrought experience over enduring excursions into indie-rock jammery, My Face rips, shreds, and permanently damages every turntable lucky enough to jive with their vibrations. Pop Echo kept this one limited to 300, so grip fast while copies remain within the ether.

SONDE :: Outdoor Miners – Disgust

Outdoor Miners
Disgust
(Pop Echo Records)
Edmonton, AB
::web/sounds::

From the disgusted mind of Aaron Levin:
The latest diamond-tip offering from Edmonton’s autarchic trio is a convergence of the varied streams binding their sound. Their wilding drummer grips the mic for “Bent Brain,” a searing foray into classic punk riffery (complete with anthemic, pit-grinding chorus), while the scalding mellowness of bass-face Sagar pierces through “Friends With Money.” The whole spectrum is collected in “Disgust,” which just happens to contain an over-the-top classique rock solo. Another brilliant travelogue into the adjective-rock cosmos. ?GRIP(to infinity).

Review :: Fist City – Queen of the Slugs b/w Crime Spree

Fist City
Queen of the Slugs b/w Crime Spree
(Pop Echo Records)
Lethbridge, AB
::web/sounds::

From the crime sprees of Aaron Levin:
Southern Alberta’s hilly wasteland continues to explode with Fist City’s anamorphosis from the pop spectrum. Their twin-shriek phenomenon bludgeons us with searing, distorted leads, rolling bass lines, and a bewildering catchiness that has become their harmonic core. Fist City’s debut single is a brilliant sortie from the disempowered rurality of Alberta, charging forward into instant hit and pop satisfaction. Limited to 99-copies and available to Wyrd Alberta patrons exclusively, the 7″ will luckily be rereleased owing to an epic pressing flaw on the b-side. Recommended grippage.

Review :: Sans AIDS – Got Ideas b/w Flashlights

Sans AIDS
Got Ideas b/w Flashlights
(Pop Echo Records)
Edmonton, AB
::web/sounds::

From the (often very) bad ideas of Aaron Levin:
The inaugural single in the Pop Echo / Weird Canada 99 Sevens 7″ series saw a departure from Sans AIDS’ previous one-boy-and-a-couple-of-kick-pedals 90s lonertude. Peter’s a man now (dawg), and he’s got a mustachiod rhythm man amassing Peter’s brilliance into pop canon; gnarled, bassy guitar with trademarked™ lead complexity, erratic pacing, and incredible catchiness forming like Voltron to create the quintessential pop marvel on two sides. SICC+++

Review :: Outdoor Miners – Twelve Hundred Dollars 7″

Outdoor Miners - Twelve Hundred Dollars 7" Outdoor Miners
Twelve Hundred Dollars b/w Keep Me Warm / Turn You Into Glue
(Pop Echo Records)
Edmonton, AB
::web/sounds::

Are you ready? Because anthemic rock rarely ignites the sing-a-long factory while retaining imagination and granularity within the recorded zone. Which is why Twelve Hundred Dollars has been an anthem to every ear lucky enough to capture its brief life on the Hydeaway Winter 2008 compilation. Re-recorded and released as a 7″ via Edmonton’s Pop Echo Records, Twelve Hundred Dollars retains every ounce of arm-swinging, vertical strutting, no-money bravado as ever, and dammit, it’s still the biggest anthem to every rent-paying, cheapskate jerkoid who sneaks into shows, crowd-surf’s their unwilling friends, and steals 5-cent candies. They’ve paired Twelve Hundred Dollars with Keep Me Warm, segueing the Outdoor Miners into driving 90s popfuckery matched seamlessly by Alec Meen’s searing guitar leads and their iconic vocal recordings (drenched beautifully in distortion and reverb). Everybody: pay your rent!
