New Canadiana :: Myelin Sheaths – Get On Your Nerves

Myelin Sheaths
Get On Your Nerves
(Southpaw Records)
Lethbridge, AB
::web/sounds::

From the nervous sheets of Aaron Levin:
The most realized piece of psy-fi punk shreddery from the camp that put Alberta on the map for fringe aficionados. Burning beyond saturated garage riffery, Get On Your Nerves cauterizes all hemorrhaging power-chord burnitude, thrusting a strychnine hybrid of freejacked harmonies and maximum guitar overdrive straight to the dome. Bask in the crushed pop panoramas bursting through membranes of a nihilist future. Glorious 12″ vinyl LP with a limited clear version. Pass the grippy on the left hand side.

Review :: Myelin Sheaths – Stackticon 7″

Myelin Sheaths
Stackticon 7″
(Bachelor Records)
Lethbridge, AB
::web/sounds::

From the laboratory disaster of Jesse Locke:
Not since the glory days of Thomas Dolby has the world been gifted with such catchy songs about science. Following their debut 7” released via the HoZac Records Hookup Klub, Leth/Death/Methbridge’s Myelin Sheaths are back with another Bunsen-burnt four-song platter, this time stamped with the imprint of Bachelor Records from Austria. AUSTRIA! Big ups, guys. A-side opener “Stackticon” is a scrappy, foaming-at-the-mouth cheerleader chant rocker, clocking in at 1:40 and blown the eff out just like Paul Lawton loves it. “SPF70” is a moody instrumental with tasteful guitar wrangling that almost sounds surf-y in places, which, now that I think about it, the suntan lotion song title is assuredly alluding to. On the flip, the head-bashing repetition of “Laboratory Disaster” and garagey girl groupisms of “Fun With Science” will be familiar to anyone who’s caught these cats live or copped their O.G. self-released CD. For all your fuzzy, skuzzy weirdo rock needs, the Mammoth Cave keeps on churning out the goods.
[Levin's Note: Austria! Wild!!]

Promotions :: WYRD FEST

Yes, Edmonton finally got its first underground music festival. It’s starting out small, with just 16 bands in one evening across two-stages, but I’m sure Wyrd Fest will become the revenue generating, gold-tank driving, investment masterpiece of Obey Convention, Sled Island, and Pop Montreal in no time!

In the meantime, see the full details here: WYRD FEST

Promotion :: Sat. Sept 5 :: Wicked Awesomes! LP Release! At Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes

For international readers, this post will be totally irrelevant. Except for the following: I am sick and I just got back from the world’s second-largest mall, which means I’m stressed out and angry. I spent $50 on a pair of pants because I got a new job. Ridiculous.

For Edmonton readers, I’d like to remind you that on Saturday September 5th Weird Canada will be presenting the The Wicked Awesomes!’s LP release party at Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes. Music and bowling.

Weird Canada Presents

The Wicked Awesomes! “Punk Holograms” LP Release Party!!!

… WITH …

The Wicked Awesomes! (Edmonton, AB)
Myelin Sheaths (Lethbridge, AB)
Moby Dicks (Lethbridge, AB)
Grown-Ups (Calgary, AB)

Come down to Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes for the one-night-only extravaganza of the year. “Punk Holograms,” the debut LP by Edmonton’s uber-weirdos The Wicked Awesomes! is sure to be the most talked about record from Edmonton this year. And they’ll be coming back from a North American tour that received a huge amount of press, including a glowing review on the Brooklyn Vegan blog!

Joining The Wicked Awesomes will be a weird-punk invasion from Lethbridge and Calgary. We have the Myelin Sheaths, who devastated crowds at the Sled Island Music Festival and will be releasing a 7″ on the fabled HoZac Records label (home to Smith Westerns, Blank Dogs, Nobunny, Nothing People, and a host of other underground talent). Tagging along will be the Moby Dicks, whose weird lo-fi garage is sure to turn the heads of folks fortunate enough to catch them now (before they explode – KABOOM!). And coming up from Calgary will be this unknown band Grown-Ups whose MySpace I loved so much I asked them to drive all they way to Edmonton for this show!

***BONNIE DOON BOWLING LANES ::: LOCATED AT 85 st. and 82 ave.(in the bonnie doon shopping mall)****

Yes, the event will take place at Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes! This is fantastic. Not only does the venue serve beer but it’s ALL AGES as well! The lanes will be open all night, so there will also be a BOWLING COMPETITION!! Win radical stuff!

And now for the bands!

The Myelin Sheaths were sold out of their CDR after devastating a small crowd during Calgary’s Sled Island music festival. And dammit, my ass is burnt! I never got one and now I want one! When they were ready to record, Martine and Cassandra, founders of Myelin Sheaths, approached Paul from Endangered Ape as the resident Lethbridge recording weirdo. Paul hastily joined the band and took a producing role. The result is a qualitative analysis in pulverizing sci-punk; imagine William Gibson trying to write a biology textbook with a busted Fender drenched in ink. It’s fun, it’s rad, it’s vaguely educational, and it sounds like absolute crud; fragmented distorto-thoughts oozing out of your nervous system in a ridiculous attempt to escape the cavernous spectral-noise that is Paul’s hallmark recording style. Myelin Sheaths will be a big deal whether you like it or not. Look out for an upcoming 7″ on Hozac Records. Lethbridge shreds. Paul shreds. Myelin Sheaths shred. Let’s shred with them.
