New Canadiana :: Man Made Hill – Future Florists

On the brink of a sexual explosion, Man Made Hill’s warbled army of synthetic bone tweak the subconscious with unmitigated groove. Only Toronto could provoke such a paramount of reductive funk bursting with subterrestrial bass and xenomorphic rhythm, paving the way for incumbent beings of radiant grind. Brought to you in finely compacted form by Inyrdisk. Ultragrip.

New Canadiana :: Cocobeurre – Landing

New Canadiana :: Dirty Beaches – Badlands

Badlands is quite a venture. From swaying croons to strenuous screams, we continue to follow Alex Zhang Hungtai’s solo foray into personal fiction. More mature than previous outings, this LP contains his best songs yet, and reveals a more aggressive side to his traditional film noir chic. It’s a scratchy and loopy ride, revisiting the past while staying firmly grounded in a singular breezy headspace of conceptual avant-garde. I’m so glad everyone seems to be enthused on just how good Dirty Beaches’ sounds are right now.

Lively yet relaxed, Pictures on the Wall is jam-packed with hooks, sunny vocal harmonies and smooth bedroom-fi fuzz. With 12 short songs packed into 19 minutes of tape, Lab Coast show excellent focus and economy in crafting fine laid-back pop. It’s springtime, life is good again, so stay in bed a little longer and then go ride your bike or something.

New Canadiana :: Lab Coast // Extra Happy Ghost!!! – Lab Coast / Extra Happy Ghost!!!

There’s always been a certain charm to bedroom recordings. Both Lab Coast and Extra Happy Ghost!!! wear their affinity for this homespun aesthetic on their sleeves, and it’s this shared dedication to lo-fi home recording that makes them an ideal pair for this split from Calgary’s Saved by Vinyl. Lab Coast tears a page straight out of the Guided by Voices handbook with a pair of sundrenched slacker-pop tunes, while Extra Happy Ghost!!! slows things on the flipside with a couple of decidedly more introspective tracks. But even when the songs begin to chill out, the fuzz and jangle remains strong in the mix, reminding us that this is the sound coming from the basements and bedrooms of our own land. Robert Pollard would be proud, and you know what? So should we.

New Canadiana :: Bulldog Skin – Blue EP

Searing glam-pop encrusted in the gritty ooze of Toronto’s cold-hearted concrete labyrinth. Mired in trebbly four-track cassette moves, the bleary power-pop magyk ensconced inside Blue punctures every aural orifice with impressive jabs of catch. It’s a timeless summer crib for slackers seeking refuge from the hurly burly whirling within the centre of the world. Hand-painted covers for the extra grip factor.

New Canadiana :: Rebecca’s Room – The Burned CD

New Waterford’s bedroom-punk heeds no boundaries. Fuzzed-out mono-pop, warped keyboard layers and oscillating noise behind shambling slackertude all play together, seamlessly blending the last 20 years of college rock, lo-fi jams and punk aggression. Rebecca’s Room keep it interesting and surprising, and this CD’s eight songs don’t even seem to scratch the surface of the band’s anthemic, monotonically drawled out bangers. “Cherry” embodies youthful exuberance and wasted nights of ingested meaning, while “All That You Say” has Dylan-esque blasé and hooks for days. These upper-downer jams mix with more contemplative fare to bring a full serving of the frantic but bored, laid back psych-acoustic numbers and blown-out noise pop.

New Canadiana :: Freak Heat Waves // Funs – Demos Tape

Like a root beer float melting on your flip flops, Freak Heat Waves — the latest project from Medicine Hat’s finest — bring the faded beach bum jams with this odds ‘n’ sods collection. Scrappy, slight and seemingly recorded with minimal stress, it’s the particular style of mellow that comes part and parcel with Victoria and truly sounds best on cassette. On the flip, Thomas Di Ninno’s solo project Funs offers its own homespun charm via rambling guitar solos, grooving horns and a lazy David Berman drawl. Steady coastin’…

New Canadiana :: Ruddy Guy – Best of Microcassette Archives

Ruddy Guy
Best of Microcassette Archives
(Self Released)
Vancouver, BC
::web/sounds::

From teenage surgery of Aaron Levin:
Blown-, hallowed-, adjective’d-out basement moves from this Vancouver-via-Calgary mystery. Immediately addictive juvenile pop frequencies with an imagination rarely seen in the genre emanate from the compilation of 4-track demos recorded between 2008-2009. The dreamy, fragile soundescapes will drift through your mind, leaving traces of Ruddy Guy’s pop agility in every neural transmitters. I’m not really sure how you can grip this, but you should try.

New Canadiana :: Félix de l’Étoile – Le Mystérieux Prisme en Lit et la Saga d’Ator Bacham

Félix de l’Étoile
Le Mystérieux Prisme en Lit et la Saga d’Ator Bacham
(Jeunesse Cosmique)
Montreal, PQ
::web/sounds::
