From the small-town sweet epic of Benoit Poirier:
A comet that fled the big city (Montreal) to get away from its sorrow, Les Nitrates de Madame Mimieux (R.I.P. 2011-2011) landed in the small Eastern Townships’ village of Sutton. Quietly, the band began to work on a first opus of slacker folk-pop, soaring with old synths as vast and textured as the region that welcomed them and capable as much of towering, carried out moments as it is soft or worried ambience. This is lively music for a rainy day with a definite intention of taking you by the hand, changeable like the seasons while never getting completely dark, as if Walter Wendy Carlos’ Sonic Seasonings were played by Chad VanGaalen. Small-town sweet epic.

Once again, Pink Noise mastermind Mark Sauner sounds like a laid-back, drug dealing, cartoon street hustler leaning against a brick wall trying to sweet-talk you. Are you going to get inside his black Cadillac and go for a cruise? I warn you he’s headed for a futuristic district. The windows to this man’s soul may be tinted, but it’s a luxury ride to the finish line. This is mutant-making music. These anthems would provide the suitable soundtrack for a dystopian inner-city youth centre with a poisoned water supply. The Pink Noise is truly a national treasure and sorely under recognized for its achievements in the field of sleaze.

[Ed’s note: Yes, we already posted about this album in its original format. This is its fourth pressing and first on wax from the good folks at Pleasence, and it sounds sleazier than ever…]

Recorded and mixed with the deft touch of Chad VanGaalen, the swirl of overdriven anti-solos, vintage organ squelch and mesmeric harmonies from the golden pipes of Laura Leif shine brighter than ever. Hypothetical damage and degenerate groove spring Disco Prison into an ultraverse of mutant Prince and casio-Konrad. Heavy grippage.

From the end of a past day of Benoit Poirier:
Cocobeurre is the solo project of keyboard player (and King Khan’s sister) Coco Khan, who previously sweated what she knew in garage acts The Del-Gators and The Milky Ways. Now a mom who learned to take it easy, Coco is surrounded with vintage synths and comfy collabs (King Khan and Choyce, among others) in order to float on or go swim. These abstract electro-pop lullabies and playful nursery rhymes evoke blurry sandboxes or the memory of a beach. Stuffed with soothing worry reminiscent of Quebec’s legendary kids show Passe-Partout or an imagined past where Brian Eno had aimed Another Green World at children, these 10 home-fi songs will make you slip into the felicity of a hot summer day’s end.

Badlands is quite a venture. From swaying croons to strenuous screams, we continue to follow Alex Zhang Hungtai’s solo foray into personal fiction. More mature than previous outings, this LP contains his best songs yet, and reveals a more aggressive side to his traditional film noir chic. It’s a scratchy and loopy ride, revisiting the past while staying firmly grounded in a singular breezy headspace of conceptual avant-garde. I’m so glad everyone seems to be enthused on just how good Dirty Beaches’ sounds are right now.

For us Canadians, spring comes with a peculiar feeling of delight, and this is precisely the kind of soundtrack you need when waking up from winter hibernation. Lively yet relaxed, Pictures on the Wall is jam-packed with hooks, sunny vocal harmonies and smooth bedroom-fi fuzz. With 12 short songs packed into 19 minutes of tape, Lab Coast show excellent focus and economy in crafting fine laid-back pop. It’s springtime, life is good again, so stay in bed a little longer and then go ride your bike or something.

There’s always been a certain charm to bedroom recordings. Both Lab Coast and Extra Happy Ghost!!! wear their affinity for this homespun aesthetic on their sleeves, and it’s this shared dedication to lo-fi home recording that makes them an ideal pair for this split from Calgary’s Saved by Vinyl. Lab Coast tears a page straight out of the Guided by Voices handbook with a pair of sundrenched slacker-pop tunes, while Extra Happy Ghost!!! slows things on the flipside with a couple of decidedly more introspective tracks. But even when the songs begin to chill out, the fuzz and jangle remains strong in the mix, reminding us that this is the sound coming from the basements and bedrooms of our own land. Robert Pollard would be proud, and you know what? So should we.
