A comet that fled the big city (Montreal) to get away from its sorrow, Les Nitrates de Madame Mimieux (R.I.P. 2011-2011) landed in the small Eastern Townships’ village of Sutton. Quietly, the band began to work on a first opus of slacker folk-pop, soaring with old synths as vast and textured as the region that welcomed them and capable as much of towering, carried out moments as it is soft or worried ambience. This is lively music for a rainy day with a definite intention of taking you by the hand, changeable like the seasons while never getting completely dark, as if Walter Wendy Carlos’ Sonic Seasonings were played by Chad VanGaalen. Small-town sweet epic.

Cocobeurre is the solo project of keyboard player (and King Khan’s sister) Coco Khan, who previously sweated what she knew in garage acts The Del-Gators and The Milky Ways. Now a mom who learned to take it easy, Coco is surrounded with vintage synths and comfy collabs (King Khan and Choyce, among others) in order to float on or go swim. These abstract electro-pop lullabies and playful nursery rhymes evoke blurry sandboxes or the memory of a beach. Stuffed with soothing worry reminiscent of Quebec’s legendary kids show Passe-Partout or an imagined past where Brian Eno had aimed Another Green World at children, these 10 home-fi songs will make you slip into the felicity of a hot summer day’s end.

Badlands est une expédition. Par la romance chancelante susurrée et les cris astreignants, on continue de suivre Alex Zhang Hungtai jusqu’au creux de sa fiction personnelle. Plus mature que sur ses parutions passées, on le trouve à son meilleur sur ce premier LP, en plus de lui découvrir une agressivité nouvelle à même son habituel chic de film noir. Égratigné et cyclique, le chemin revisite le passé pour le juxtaposer habilement avec une vision conceptuelle singulière et avant-gardiste. Récent favori des critiques, je ne peux penser à un artiste qui le mérite davantage.

Nous, habitants des grands froids, savons qu’un bonheur tout particulier accompagne l’arrivée du printemps, et cet album est précisément le genre dont on a besoin au moment de sortir de notre torpeur d’hibernation hivernale. Énergique mais posé, Pictures on the Wall est une bonne dose de hooks, d’harmonies vocales ensoleillées et de la distortion digne des enregistrements de sous-sol. Avec 12 chansons en 19 minutes, l’excellente pop décontractée de Lab Coast s’y trouve concentrée et économe. On l’aime parce que c’est le printemps, parce que la vie est belle et parce qu’après une sieste prolongée, on ira faire une balade à vélo.
