New Canadiana :: Hey Mother Death – Hey Mother Death EP

Hey Mother Death - Hey Mother Death EP
Down at the candlelit cabaret, Hey Mother Death are swaying onstage in spontaneous reverie. On their lavishly packaged debut cassette, this Granelli schooled duo hovers through an unclassifiable sound-cloud of spoken word, sleaze-guitar and haunted Hohner spectres. The aura of Isabella looms large. 50 copies. G.R.I.P.

New Canadiana :: Le Quatuor de Jazz Libre du Québec – 1973

LE QUATUOR DE JAZZ LIBRE DU QUÉBEC - 1973
Deep within le Petit Québec libre, a group of stalwart jazz freaks began bridging the divide between improvised music and contemporary avant-garde. After releasing an LP on the infamous CBC Transcription service, Le Quatuor De Jazz Libre Du Quebéc began a welcomed transfiguration into a revolutionary ensemble championing the art of experimentation and revolt. This reissue, lovingly packaged by Quebec’s finest avant imprint (Tenzier), captures an unreleased session at the zenith of their creative expression (1973). Droves of intense skronk and burning percussion lace the energetic action with unfettered fire. A paragon within Quebec’s outstanding free scene. Must grip.

New Canadiana :: La Part Maudite // Dios Mio! – Our Balls Are Like Dead Suns EP // Leçon practique d’hypnotisme

New Canadiana :: Jom Comyn – Comynge Tegythere

Jom Comyn takes another giant leap forward in the development of his own micro-genre: snowglobe-folk. Guitar lines still sometimes eddy like slow-floating sediment, settling gently along a song’s backbone, but Comynge Tegythere‘s meteorological sphere harbors more devastating weather as well, sometimes verging on sheer white-out. Layers of noise stratify and coalesce, parting curtain-like to reveal full-bodied songs, scuzz-jazz meanderings, and hangdog laments in Jim Cumming’s signature baritone — a voice which has never held more weight than it does in the ghostly haunting number, “Been Down Blues.” Jim buffs winter sadness to a dull glow of acceptance in a city where the snow never leaves. Shake hard. [Packaged with an elaborate zine for those who attended the tape release.]

New Canadiana :: CORSE – CORSE

CORSE
CORSE
(Self Released)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

From the corsage of Jesse Locke:
Running parallel but all too rarely overlapping with Montreal’s many other status quo-challenging subsets, a cluster of avant-jazz, electroacoustic and free improv freedom fighters can be found tucked inside the crevices. With their set-up of trumpet, trombone, drums and laptop, the mighty CORSE are prime specimens of this class, blitzkrieging (relatively) recognizable instrument sounds with a blizzard of computerized bleeps, swirls, chirps and garbled vocals. Recorded live over three days at experimental music hotspot L’Envers and painstakingly tweaked in post-production for many moons afterwards, the quartet’s eponymous CD is a challenging, off-kilter yet consistently engaging listen. Of course.

New Canadiana :: JAZZ – BURNT

JAZZ
BURNT
(Self Released)
Edmonton, AB
::web/sounds::

From the burnt riddims of Jesse Locke:
On JAZZ’s debut c8, Weird Canada overlord Aaron Levin — backed by pals from Gobble Gobble, Dropping Out and the Wicked Awesomes! — channels his hyperbolic written enthusiasm into quadro-spazzed blink-and-you’ll-miss-‘em ragers. Fall might be creeping into winter, but international jangle-punk superhits like “Your Stuff”, “Cowboy” and especially the stupidly catchy “Summer” will bring you right back to the glorious (hot) dog days. Bonus points for the über creepy cover photo of Levin Senior and his leather-clad ladyfriend. Frettin’ about conflicts of interest is for chumps…

New Canadiana :: Jerry Granelli – 1313

Jerry Granelli
1313
(Divorce Records)
Halifax, NS
::web/sounds::

From the mallets of Aaron Levin:
This pre-hippie legend left jazz’s softer pastures to join the Light Sound Dimension (LSD) ensemble. After a few marathons pairing amplified jazz with projection paintings (creating the first ever psychedelic light and sound event in 1967) Granelli made a few rounds with avant-heavyweights (read: Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, et al) and suddenly sailing north to the sunny shores of Halifax for a full-time new age retreat. Having resided in Halifax since, it’s surprising he never released a solo drum record and we’re thankful the folks at Divorce Records were bold enough to capture Granelli’s percussive journey. Weaving between rhythmic corridors and metallic shimmer, 1313 is a brilliant exploration of percussion, sound, and the secret lives of glimmering minds. Cerebral expansion guaranteed.

Promotions :: WYRD FEST

Yes, Edmonton finally got its first underground music festival. It’s starting out small, with just 16 bands in one evening across two-stages, but I’m sure Wyrd Fest will become the revenue generating, gold-tank driving, investment masterpiece of Obey Convention, Sled Island, and Pop Montreal in no time!

In the meantime, see the full details here: WYRD FEST

Promotion :: Sat. Sept 5 :: Wicked Awesomes! LP Release! At Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes

For international readers, this post will be totally irrelevant. Except for the following: I am sick and I just got back from the world’s second-largest mall, which means I’m stressed out and angry. I spent $50 on a pair of pants because I got a new job. Ridiculous.

For Edmonton readers, I’d like to remind you that on Saturday September 5th Weird Canada will be presenting the The Wicked Awesomes!’s LP release party at Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes. Music and bowling.

Weird Canada Presents

The Wicked Awesomes! “Punk Holograms” LP Release Party!!!

… WITH …

The Wicked Awesomes! (Edmonton, AB)
Myelin Sheaths (Lethbridge, AB)
Moby Dicks (Lethbridge, AB)
Grown-Ups (Calgary, AB)

Come down to Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes for the one-night-only extravaganza of the year. “Punk Holograms,” the debut LP by Edmonton’s uber-weirdos The Wicked Awesomes! is sure to be the most talked about record from Edmonton this year. And they’ll be coming back from a North American tour that received a huge amount of press, including a glowing review on the Brooklyn Vegan blog!

Joining The Wicked Awesomes will be a weird-punk invasion from Lethbridge and Calgary. We have the Myelin Sheaths, who devastated crowds at the Sled Island Music Festival and will be releasing a 7″ on the fabled HoZac Records label (home to Smith Westerns, Blank Dogs, Nobunny, Nothing People, and a host of other underground talent). Tagging along will be the Moby Dicks, whose weird lo-fi garage is sure to turn the heads of folks fortunate enough to catch them now (before they explode – KABOOM!). And coming up from Calgary will be this unknown band Grown-Ups whose MySpace I loved so much I asked them to drive all they way to Edmonton for this show!

***BONNIE DOON BOWLING LANES ::: LOCATED AT 85 st. and 82 ave.(in the bonnie doon shopping mall)****

Yes, the event will take place at Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes! This is fantastic. Not only does the venue serve beer but it’s ALL AGES as well! The lanes will be open all night, so there will also be a BOWLING COMPETITION!! Win radical stuff!
