Ex Libris :: Before the End [James Kirkpatrick // Thesis Sahib]

The colorful splotches and spazmodic robot-rap of London’s James Kirkpatrick get the deluxe treatment with this bodacious book+7″ combo. According to intros from Jesse Dangerously and Robyn Metcalfe, Kirkpatrick has been perfecting his unique visual/sound craft since pasting up early aughts tags on the streets of Halifax. Here, his playfully abstract creations — oddly reminiscent of ice cream, hamburgers and/or submarines — and music-spewing sound sculptures are showcased in gallery-caliber blow-ups. The sky blue slab of vinyl and accompanying 16-song download card provide a fittingly tweaked soundtrack via the fiery rhymes of Kirkpatrick’s alter-ego Thesis Sahib, bumped over porno bass and Game Boy™ bleeps, sweeps and creeps. It’s the perfect no-brow coffee table package for discerning weirdos.

From the private pantry of Dr. Jesse Locke:
Edmonton’s Krang began as a drum and bass (not D&B) duo featuring mustachioed main-men Jordan Foster and Jared Majeski, cheekily dubbing themselves the Two Man Electrical Band. However, it wasn’t until the enlisting of Zebra Pulse’s Parker Thiessen on cracked electronics, clarinet and manipulated kids toys that the trio truly cemented their sound. Now, with Foster and Majeski trading off tripped-out, heavily echoed vocals over hypnotic Sabbath riffs (dig the Master of Reality-influenced album art), lonely harmonica and what sounds like a malfunctioning robot squealing away abrasively high in the mix, these teenage mutants have raised the gnar bar high. [Levin's note: I like these dudes because they sound like German art-punk on meth.]
