New Canadiana :: CFCF – c28

CFCF
c28
(They Live We Sleep)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

From the popul magic of Jesse Locke:
Bobbing down chopped ‘n’ screwed rapids like a nightbus driver swilling drank, Montreal’s Mike Silver (a.k.a. CFCF) floods ear canals with this limited edition tape dub of The River EP. Tapping into the tropical zones of Popul Vuh’s Fitzcarraldo soundtrack, the scene is set with gleaming pools of synth before drifting into jungle (not Junglist) beats, haunted mansion pianos and hair-curling steam blasts. They Live We Sleep founder Rob Feulner (a.k.a. Video Nasties) also graced the EP standout with a hypnolasagnic clip melding memories from Garfield and Friends™. The burden of dreaminess rests on all involved.

Dirty Beaches + Hobo Cubes + Street Gnar // GENERIC SHIT
Decadent // GENERIC SHIT
(Campaign for Infinity)
Montreal, PQ // Sydney, NS

Secret Pyramid
Ghosts
(Self Released)
Vancouver, BC
::web/sounds::

From the hidden rhombi of Aaron Levin:
Minimalist journeys through static debris and processed guitar form the blueprint to this Solars side project hailing from Vancouver. The dense new age grooves on Ghosts are a fitting sonar trigger to your mental mars vacation; calming reverberations through cosmic fog, dripping vocals and mystic drones. Listen with three ears… or three hands.

Music :: Mongst – Kamira

Mongst
Kamira
(Isolated Now Waves (INW 226))
Vancouver, BC
::web/sounds::

From the genital fusion of Aaron Levin:
Kamira sees Mongst traversing the dualic streams of Glassian multi-part ambience and melanic guitar exertion; both avenues percolating his soundscape with dialectical conviction. Let the hypnotic minimalia of “Or Does It Explode” take your mind through a 12 minute trip into ancient ambient pastures, climaxing with a heavy dose of tranquil string dronage. The whole passage seems serene when compared to “The Riverboard Caroline”‘s avant-occult shreddery, and thankfully the contradictions don’t stop there. A brilliant strip of experimentalia from one of Vancouver’s finest.

Music :: White Dog – White Dog

White Dog
White Dog
(Prairie Fire Tapes)
Edmonton, AB
::web/sounds::

From the dogless white of Jesse Locke:
Barking at the moon from the heart of middle Canada, White Dog’s Chris Jacques doubles as the co-founder of Prairie Fire Tapes and its off branch Dub Ditch Picnic. This four-song c30 is the latest ear-clot from his ambient/drone project, and finds Jacques in a meditative mood while maintaining trademark murk. Following three storm and stress instrumental creepers, the clear culmination is closer “A Forest”. Here, haunted vocal samples sink into plaintive acoustic plucks, mystical wind chimes and ominous horror movie hums for a spirit animal ceremony that’s both mesmerizing and mysterious.

Review :: Knit Prism – Orbs

Knit Prism
Orbs
(Gift Tapes)
??, ON
::web/sounds::

From the Orbic Wyzydry of Aaron Levin:
Mysterious nuances permeate Knit Prisms’ journey into the new age as Orbs transcends the tranquil wizardry of sonambience. It’s a gravitational lure of patient addiction dragging you to the most ambient conclusion; spectral chromes of lysergic waves slowly shifting terra’s organic aural symmetries. Hand-numbered edition of 100 cassettes from this prestigious American label.

Review :: Silver Dapple / Les Beyond – White Door By Carl

Silver Dapple / Les Beyond
White Door By Carl
(Planet of the Tapes)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

From the white doors of Aaron Levin:
Two Albertans find each other in Montreal during a French class while an ex-Shearing Pinx member embarks on a solo project of ambient processed guitar and French language learning. Unexpectedly, the two groups, Silver Dapple and Les Beyond (respectively), share the sides of a brilliant c10 that forges the hidden links between 90s femme-pop and cerebral guitar work-outs. Silver Dapple inject their pop mastery into the hidden teenager scheming within your mind-sphere while Les Beyond thwarts your tomfoolery with twilight mellowtude. All of this accomplished in under 20 minutes care-of Montreal’s latest addition to the cassette scene, Planet of the Tapes.

Review :: Solars – Mist

Solars
Mist
(Prairie Fire)
Vancouver, BC
::web/sounds::

From the misty fire of Aaron Levin:
Winnipeg’s Prairie Fire boldly capture Solars’ dronic embers on this fantastic voyage within the sublime realms of electronic nullism. Delicate, aquatic guitars hover above the pulsing washes of Mist‘s b-side, while “solder + sons” drills deep within our cosmic electrolytes. Stay for the full ride and bring your mind to pure psychic parity. Both tracks were recored live.

Review :: Beard Closet – Amputated Orchestra

Beard Closet
Amputated Orchestra
(Self-Released)
Toronto, ON
::web/sounds::

From the, well, bearded closet of Aaron Levin:
Amputated Orchestra is a collection of permeating industrial soundscapes emanating from Canada’s cold, concrete nucleus. The focused array of droning apparitions and discretized guitar tones provide the perfect bedding to your next post-apocalyptic jaunt. And If you’re lucky you’ll stumble into a sub-sea-level gregorian nightmare with Beard Closet at the focal point, conjuring an event horizon of dark ambient wizardry. Contact Beard Closet for post-economic guided gours and ambient sorcery apprenticeship opportunities. A+++++.

Departure :: EMILY – Neat and Tidy in Your Mind (1985)

EMILY
Neat and Tidy in Your Mind
(Mo=Da=Mu)
Vancouver, BC
Originally Released: 1985

From the generally untidy mind of Aaron Levin:
Destructive guitar congruance. Menacing synthetic tones. Echo-to-infinity vox processing. Extirpated TASCAM wreckage. Neat and Tidy in My Mind is the most relentless barrage of left-field maximal synth North American has ever seen. It’s the second cassette by solo, multi-format Vancouver artist Emily Faryna, whose visionary digital mythics have been obscured by Canada’s under-documented vintage cassette scene. Her conical prose hovers darkly over Neat and Tidy‘s minor-key delirium, brewing the magnetic urgency coursing through its self-producing ether; a last, desperate attempt to convince the world that the mind’s ailments exist on the outside. It’s a gateway drug into the underbelly of a hyper intimate experimental underground torn from the pages of Neuromancer and, to me, the flagship vehicle for the vanguard of fringe-Canada. Words left to describe Neat and Tidy in Your Mind: ambitious, singular, forward-thinking, powerful, intense, and prodigious. There is a reissue in the works.
