New Canadiana :: Sans AIDS – Loaners

Sans AIDS
Loaners
(Bart Records)
Edmonton, AB
::web/sounds::

From the stoop of Aaron Levin:
Sans AIDS continues to explore the gnarled fringes of our pop continuum, welding their aggro-pop catch into the grey matter lurking behind our ears. Waves of frenetic tremolo glint off the trademark bass drones and sultry tom-snare combos, combing their complex pop sensibilities into prom-worthy anti-glam. Loaners shines with a rusty glare, twisting your aural signals into the deep nostalgia hiding behind every mirror.

New Canadiana :: Jesuslesfilles – Une Belle Table

Jesuslesfilles
Une Belle Table
(Self Released)
Montreal, PQ
::web/sounds::

From the jangly jangle of Jesse Locke:
With their wiry guitars, hopped-up hooks and Fin du Monde-soaked boy-girl vocals, Jesuslesfilles bring to mind a wickedly francophone Pixies. However, blasting through the 90s jangle of their debut full-length are nuggets of Nuggets-style psych-fuzz, and it’s as much classic rock as it is Come On Pilgrim. From the downcast drift of “Tes Yeux” to the ghostly ringing chords of “Mercredi”, there’s a wealth of melody crammed into these 11 songs, all clocking in at less than four minutes. Even if your understanding of french is as embarrassingly lacking as mine, Une Belle Table will speak to you in the international language of riffs.

New Canadiana :: Sans AIDS // Lake Country – Sans AIDS / Lake Country Split Tape

Sans AIDS // Lake Country
Sans AIDS / Lake Country Split Tape
(Fan Club Music Club)
Edmonton, AB // Victoria, BC
::web/sounds:: // ::web/sounds::

From the northern lights of Aaron Levin:
For anyone unable to witness the pantheon of talent germinating within 2010 Alberta, the Sans AIDS // Lake Country split is prime listening. Edmonton’s drowned-out, heel-stomping bass-tone mastermind Sans AIDS fills 28 minutes of blistering summertime pop nostalgia; a sound I’ll forever associate with the year we all yelled “I Can’t Handle This.” On the flip-side, Medicine Hat, Alberta ex-pats Lake Country harvest their broiling garage-punk rural jams, a hallmark signal from the infamous Mt. Royal beast that wreaked havoc through Edmonton’s sinusoidal consciousness. Essential grippage.

Music :: Nü Sensae – TV, Death and the Devil

Nü Sensae
TV, Death and the Devil
(Nominal Records)
Vancouver, BC
::web/sounds::

From the televised meanderings of Aaron Levin:
Bursting through the basement murk of their last string of releases, Vancouver’s blistering two-piece have finally captured their bludgeoning low-end jabs with brilliant fidelity. Let the blaring rapid-snap ferocity course through your body as Andrea’s shrieks peel wigs and burn minds; it’s ritual time in the realm of dualic fringe and we’re all invited to the party. Check your mind at the door, lay your ears at their alter and praise the new queen of shred.

Music :: Meat Curtains // Pompoir – Blue Rare

Meat Curtains // Pompoir
Blue Rare
(Isolated Now Waves (INW 235))
Halifax, NS // Vancouver, BC
::web/sounds:: // ::web/sounds::

From the blue-label rarity of James Goddard:
There is the music – loud, thrashed out, punk descended, riff heavy tunes held together by cacophonous percussion and throat tearing vocals. Then there is the politics – re-appropriating pejorative terms for female anatomy and sex acts, a jaded DIY nihilism, and the revolutionary potential of punk itself. There is the A Side – Halifax’s critic-baiting, charcuterie-themed, absurdist fem-core four piece Meat Curtains. Then there is the B Side – Vancouver’s sex-positive, weird punk, all-stars. There is…you’re still reading this crap? You should probably listen to the fuckin’ traxxx. Now. It’s imperative.

Review :: Sans AIDS – Got Ideas b/w Flashlights

Sans AIDS
Got Ideas b/w Flashlights
(Pop Echo Records)
Edmonton, AB
::web/sounds::

From the (often very) bad ideas of Aaron Levin:
The inaugural single in the Pop Echo / Weird Canada 99 Sevens 7″ series saw a departure from Sans AIDS’ previous one-boy-and-a-couple-of-kick-pedals 90s lonertude. Peter’s a man now (dawg), and he’s got a mustachiod rhythm man amassing Peter’s brilliance into pop canon; gnarled, bassy guitar with trademarked™ lead complexity, erratic pacing, and incredible catchiness forming like Voltron to create the quintessential pop marvel on two sides. Review :: Silver Dapple / Les Beyond – White Door By Carl

Silver Dapple / Les Beyond
White Door By Carl
(Planet of the Tapes)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

From the white doors of Aaron Levin:
Two Albertans find each other in Montreal during a French class while an ex-Shearing Pinx member embarks on a solo project of ambient processed guitar and French language learning. Unexpectedly, the two groups, Silver Dapple and Les Beyond (respectively), share the sides of a brilliant c10 that forges the hidden links between 90s femme-pop and cerebral guitar work-outs. Silver Dapple inject their pop mastery into the hidden teenager scheming within your mind-sphere while Les Beyond thwarts your tomfoolery with twilight mellowtude. All of this accomplished in under 20 minutes care-of Montreal’s latest addition to the cassette scene, Planet of the Tapes.

Review :: North of America – 12345678910

North of America
12345678910
(Bart Records)
Halifax, NS
::web/sounds::

From the North of America fanboydom of Jesse Locke:
Other than the guy from Japan who flew to Montreal for their final farewell show a few months back, Bart Records founder Kevin Stebner is quite likely the biggest North of America fan on the planet. Standing next to Stebs at said gig, I was regaled with anecdotes and factoids regarding the members’ current day-jobs, how he caught them live in Europe and just how stupidly excited he is to have now released a rarities compilation from his all-time favourite band. Along with other comp tracks and the previously unearthed jam “Hot Work,” side A is culled from the same sessions that produced NoA’s swan-song LP Brothers, Sisters (a serious tour de force if you’ve never had the pleasure). From the pulverizing guitar-work and clockwork-calculated percussion of barn burners “Beyonce”, “Hate The Player” and “We Had To Call Your Parents” to the slower tempo heart-on-sleever “I Like Everything This Much” and curious electronic interlude “Let’s Get Glitch,” 12345678910 is veritable Mana for Maritime math-rock devotees. Review :: PIG – Magnetic

PIG
Magnetic
(Campaign For Infinity)
Halifax, NS
::web/sounds::

From the magnetic eyes of Aaron Levin:
Continuing with their general disregard for genre fortification, PIG return with a c26 frothing with ataxic punk and chaotic sludge. After a side of perilous adventures through mires of improvised drones and guitar destruction, the quadro deliver a full blast of 90s doom-punk occultism. Part Altered Beast, part Ghosts and Goblins, Magnetic synthesizes the darkest parts of adjective-punk and coagulates them into an eerie resin of fractured sounds. A rare gift stolen from the hand of Moira. NO CONTINUES. GRIP++

Review :: Play Guitar – Cold Crystal Shield

Play Guitar
Cold Crystal Shield
(Campaign For Infinity)
Montreal, QC // Halifax, NS // Whitehourse, YK
::web/sounds::

From the Mithril Shields of Aaron Levin:
Living in Alberta, I associate Calgary with the strange angular pop moves found on Cold Crystal Shield. In fact, I’m starting to believe the Calgary sound is just a weird amalgamation of Montreal’s pop experiments, Halifax’s 90s obsession, and Yukon’s cold isolation. It’s all summarized brilliantly by Play Guitar with their combination of incredibly catchy guitar lines and anthemic vocal harmonies, the whole mess being driven down midnight highways and rural avenues. I say rural because I can definitely hear that 90s Halifax honky-tonk pop-rock and it’s awesome. Keep your cold, crystalized eyes out for the Play Guitar LP, coming soon!
