Searchlight Agenda :: Vote Weird

CBC Radio 3 is running a pyramidal voting scheme, vetting Weird Canada through a triumvirate of keystrokes, sinusoids, and opinionated minds. A conspiracy of this calibre must be met with deep suspicion and deliberate candor. They pit us against each other – our fellow publishers. They split our fans – those beautiful beings. They place the unbearable suffering of expectation on all who speak their name. Ye wyld typists vie for the last shard of national recognition.

Our radio Narsil has us deep in the trenches, spending weeks at your foot begging for another integer. In the heat of the mud no ideal will last. All succumb to it. Thick. Greasy. Swelling with the rainbows of fallen candidates. In the beginning we shouted “No! This voting scheme shall not stand! Free it all! Let the streets run wild with the multitude of our opinions!” But now, as the blue skies turn black, I face you filled with the adrenaline of conviction. We believe. We want to win. We write these very words to justify our victory grip.

Thanks to your support, the absurd notion that Weird Canada may win has become a reality. We have blown away all the flagpoles and are staring blankly into the void. The Top 10. Why is this important? Why does this matter? Win or not, Weird Canada will remain an exploratory experience for the brazenly adventurous. We will always focus on our northernly kin and enthuse, physically scan, and hyperbolize all the wonderful manifestations of creative potential this country has to offer. Our daily operation will continue, delightedly, into the unheralded cassette oblivion.

However, the Canadian psyche is shifting. Winning this contest may push it further into our camp. The middle ground of indie music is disappearing. The plates are grooving under due pressure from self-recorded geniuses and the industry cannot will not handle it. So we’ve come to you, our people from coast-to-coast, to ask for your vote. A vote along the streams of time. A vote for the only entity proudly bearing the emerging flag of a new northern identity. An identity not born in the offices of minor-majors, but one bursting with the charged, chromatic life festering within tape dubbers, cd burners, pressing plants, and photocopy machines.

We. Are. Northernly.

Please Welcome our New Kings

We made a call for interns and our response was magical. The e-mails flooded my inbox. I could not keep up. I go to sleep guilt-ridden, fearing the ire of enthusiastic applicants whose e-mails have gone unanswered. Nevertheless, the trek continues and in the process we’ve found two beautiful people to take on the roles of Managing Editor and Social Marketer. For photos and other sexy content, please read more about them in the contributors section.

Please welcome Jesse Locke and Jenni Roberts with open arms. They’ve poured hours and hours into Weird Canada and have (and will continue to) grow Weird Canada into the publishing behemoth it is sure to become.

Introducing…

Managing Editor Jesse Locke

Jesse has been a long-time contributor to Weird Canada and co-founder of the magnificent Texture Magazine. With prior experience in the discipline of managing energetic writers at Beatroute, Fast Forward Magazine, and other printed matter, Jesse comes into the position of Managing Editor with a tremendous amount of real-world experience. Since taking the reigns Weird Canada has seen some fresh faces (an introduction to come soon!) and welcomed the addition of new content and features. That sounds like an overly professional way of saying Jesse is rad.

(The Managing Editor is responsible for organizing and managing the contributors, ensuring the timely delivery of content, and generating ideas for new content)

Social Marketer Jenni Roberts

If you follow us on twitter or join our Facebook page than you’ve probably seen the timely postings of Jenni Roberts. Jenni has been an Edmonton staple in the music scene for years and I was really, really excited when I saw her name pop in my mailbox. She’s got a knack for metrics, way too much experience with excel spreads and an endless supply of enthusiasm.

(The Social Marketer is responsible for promoting Weird Canada through every social channel possible.)

WELCOMING IN THE AGE OF PRIME NUMBERS

Hi Everyone,

A prime year is upon us, making 2011 a year of renewal. A rebirth into the digital vortex that is our modern culture. It’s going to be an exciting year. In 2011 you can expect:

- Greater penetrating into the depths of fringe minutiae.
- Six new sections for your micro-digestive pleasure.
- An event calendar (still in beta) to help your overwhelmed and under-organized existence make it through the weekend.
- A top 10 of some-sorts.
- New contributors and new interns to bring a greater number of oddities to your desktop.
- A redesign of the website.
- Another Wyrd breaking into a new province (possibly two).
- Two interactive databases to assist bands in booking tours.
- Weird Canada in new formats.
- Whatever else we come up with along the way.

2010 was a year of huge growth for Weird Canada. This would not have been possible without you. I don’t mean this in the lazy “thanks to everyone for support” way. I really mean this. Growth would not have been possible without all the word of mouth, excitement, praise, and sharing of our content. It’s a very big deal to myself and everyone involved every time you make a hyperlink to the site. Or every time you talk about it on your radio show. Or in your own blog, newspaper, or zine. Or every time you tell a friend. Every link makes us stronger. With this in mind, I want to thank:

- All my contributors.
- Every single person who sent me or a contributor an e-mail with praise and support.
- Every band and label that sent me or one of our contributors their music.
- Every band and label that created links for their write-ups and spread them around.
- Every person who paid, danced, and enjoyed a show put on by Weird Canada or by any fringe band across Canada.
- Every single person who interacted with the site in a positive way.

I’m really looking forward to 2011. Thank you so much.

Arbutus Records & Weird Canada @ Pop Montreal

Arbutus Records Showcase
Pop Montreal 2010
(Thursday September 30, 2010 @ The Rialto Theatre)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

From the new indie of Aaron Levin:
In the closing tides of 2010 there are few festivals left. And as this little corner of a website gleaned a few weeks ago, Canada’s premiere indie-music festival (Pop Montreal) came through with a succinct and telling slogan: Weird is the New Indie. The obvious correlation is incidental, but the shifting focus to emerging music is a welcomed modulation in agenda. And to further drive the point home, Pop Montreal and Weird Canada will be presenting a showcase from one of Canada’s furthest reaching boutique imprints. Arbutus Records (home to Sean Nicholas Savage, Grimes, Silly Kissers and many more) has become an asylum for many westward ex-pats flourishing within the inexplicable fringe-pop spectrum and has occupied prime real estate within Weird Canada’s own borders. The label has grown from an e-mail address and a cd burner to a veritable force within the diy pop explosion running its course through our collective consciousness. Arbutus’ materials have appeared on Pitchfork, Gorilla VS Bear, Altered Zones, Stereogum, Weird Canada (ha!), etc. and I can say without hyperbole that many within the indie music community are anxiously awaiting to hear their future. So, with much excitement, I’d like to encourage all of our readers in-and-around the Montreal area to attend both Pop Montreal and one of the best showcases during the five-day festival. Sebastian Cowan has worked many magicks; for that we love him dearly. Congratulations!

Festival :: Sled Island 2010

Sled Island
2010
(Zak Pashak)
Calgary, AB
::web/sounds::

Sled Island 2010 is upon us. Calgary’s premiere indie music, video, and art festival is a treasure trove of exploratory stimulus. It’s the largest concentration of insanity west of everywhere (in Canada). Weird Canada and Texture Magazine will be presenting the SHRED ISLAND BBQ (x2), a free all-ages afternoon showcase on Thursday and Saturday at Tubby Dog (w/ Dropping Out, Fist City, Mount Analog, Feral Children, JAZZ, Sans AIDS, Puberty, GOBBLE GOBBLE, and (hopefully) Famines).

However, there is so much more than just our wonderful little showcase (obviously). With over 150 bands, there’s a lot to chose from, so I thought I’d filter the complete list of performers down to a “Weird Canada Selection.” The below list includes all Canadian bands that I have reviewed or seen. I have left off American bands I’m stoked about, as well as bands I’m stoked about but haven’t heard yet. I may have also forgotten one or two shows. I’m just one boy and it’s really late…

Have fun! I hope to see you there!

Aaron Levin

(short) Break for OBEY CONVENTION

Hey Everyone,

I’ll be heading out to Halifax to partake in the OBEY CONVENTION Mayhem occurring this weekend! Weird Canada will be hosting a BBQ in conjunction with the Campaign For Infinity showcase happening on Sunday afternoon. I’ll be bringing a box of over-priced Canadian 7″s to play to unsuspecting heads. Divorce Records mogul Darcy will be making burgers and doggles for you to eat. Haligonians: if you’re attending Obey, please stop by and say hi!

After I post up this compilation (see above), posts will resume on Tuesday. I wanted to get the Electric Voices Compilation review out because it’s face-melting and most of the musicians on the cassette are playing Obey. So, until then…
