To the east, fringeward.

Edmonton, AB has been a great source of inspiration and despair. Desolate winters, northern isolation, and one of the worst public transit systems in Canada breed an unruly class of desperate prairie sky-gazers brimming with creative potential; alas, this disparate, tundradic paradise of the north has captured our eyes for long enough.

In a strategic move of life-questioning proportions, Weird Canada HQ is moving to Toronto, ON.

Since our conjuring, we’ve scoured the Canadian landscape searching for sinusoidal ley lines. Medicine Hat? Brandon? Truoro? Sherbrooke? Sydney? Nelson? Perth? Ponoka? Kamloops? Cortes? Possibilities are abundant. But we’re leaping into the centre of the volcano and hope to emerge a phoenix: Ontario will be our home for the next chapter in Weird Canada’s narrative.

Friends: we are looking for unique partnerships in the hope of creating a more collaborative, supportive, and efficient underground community in Ontario and beyond. We are short on resources and long on vision. If you’re interested in working with us, please get in touch.

To the east, fringeward.

Hearts,

Aaron Levin & Marie Lef
Weird Canada

Festivities :: Celestial City 2011 [Fredericton, NB]

In our endless pursuit of marganalized rockery, we often stumble upon incredibly inspiring sources of creative energy. Case in point: the tiny city of Fredericton, New Brunswick is celebrating the second year of their newest fringe-music festival: Celestial City. Housed in the All-Ages Art Space Gallery Connexion, the festival will play host to Weird Canada favourites: Jerry Granelli, Cat Bag, Transfixed, and Saint John-native Adam Mowery. Their manifesto is simple: provide an alternative space for experimental and fringe musics while Fredericton is caught-up celebrating the ancient twangs of jazz and blues. Celestial City’s sweltering sounds will blanket Fredericton on September 16th and 17th, granting credence amongst Fredericton’s lay-folk; indeed, the new wave has come.

Festivities :: SappyFest 2011

The small college town of Sackville, New Brunswick harbours a secret. Every summer while students shop for discount books in major cities, a cult-like gathering of outsiders convenes to celebrate strange sounds in large tents, vaudeville theatres, small town cinemas and railside taverns. Turning the concept of a multi-venue festival on its head each year, SappyFest finds not the alterna-side spaces where loud noises are welcome but puts all the plaid shirts, fuzz peddles and puddles of beer right on the main street. First hosting the reunited Eric’s Trip in 2006, Sappy has grown and grown. This year’s lineup promises not to disappoint, showcasing the luminaries of independent Canadian culture both new and old, familiar and not. Alongside as yet un-tauted gems such as Cannon Bros, Hash Jesus, SILKEN LAUMANN and Wooden Wives, this year’s lineup boasts sets by current Weird Canada favourites Jennifer Castle, Chad VanGaalen, Rich Aucoin, Gobble Gobble, Grimes and Quaker Parents. And that’s just the pop music. See you there?

Wyrd III :: Win Free Sled Island Passes to See SLEEP!

Wyrd III is proud to forge bonds with Sled Island’s mind-boggling dive into festival brilliance. The sheer scope of Calgary’s premier music and art festival has been a huge inspiration behind taking Wyrd onto the intergalactic stage. In step this with partnership, Sled Island was generous enough to offer Wyrd III ticket-holders an opportunity to win a double-guest pass to Friday’s Main Stage where SLEEP is headlining. How the contest works:

1) Take a photo of your Wyrd Ticket or Eventbrite Print-out
2) Upload the photo to the Wyrd III Facebook Event.

That’s it! The winner will be selected randomly from pool of people submitting photos! If you don’t have a ticket, you can purchase a digital ticket here or visit: Blackbyrd Myoozik (Edmonton), Listen Records (Edmonton), Sloth Records (Calgary), Zoo Zhop (Vancouver), Zulu Records (Vancouver), Red Kat (Vancouver), or Waldorf Hotel (Vancouver)!

Festivities :: Ghost Throats [Edmonton, May 13-15]

There is an unusually wild Post-Hardcore scene thriving in Alberta. Untamed teenaged beasts running rampant with empty lungs and fists full of camaraderie. A singularity festering within our western abandon. It all culminates in an annual festival aptly named Ghost Throats. Organized by some familiar names within the Weird Canada cosmos (Kevin Stebner (Bart Records), Andrew Benson (Crippled Children), and Cecil Frena (GOBBLE GOBBLE)), the festival veers from the pop pantheon and remains harshly fringe, obliterating audiences with condensed signals of sound and idea.

Date: Friday, May 13th through Sunday, May 15th, 2011.
Location: Alberta Avenue Community Hall (9210 118 Avenue Northwest)
Price: $10 per day or $20 for a 3-day advance pass

Gnu Canadiana :: soulDecision – Faded

The year is 1998. My other single is (coincidentally) lingering in the background as your eyes pan over the Toronto skyline. I’m laced like a jay. Blue from head-to-toe against the orange leather my assistant gripped from Discount Furnitures. Ooh it’s kind of crazy money (money that is coincidentally being dried in an apartment below our studio). But it’s all so confusing. Why haven’t you and I hit it? I like the way you make me move. You’ve got it and I want it. So, I’ll just let my man Thrust mumble some incomprehensible and irrelevant verbage before I get you all alone and take off all your clothes. Confused?

Searchlight :: We Are Northernly

We won. This is not a small victory. This is a leap through hyperspace into a new world order where fringe reigns supreme. We’ve received the golden nod; the sphinx posed a riddle and you answered. And as our ragged lizard government grants clemency to the wyld sinusoids burrowing within all of us, it is time to acknowledge your monumental role.

You made this happen. This is our moment. And well shall never forget.

Hearts,

Aaron Levin
Weird Canada

PS – There shall be no posts today. Today we nap. And on the weekend we rise again. There shall be many polemics. And even more exaltation of Canada’s underground.
