we are northernly

The New Canadiana section of Weird Canada’s universe is dedicated to all things new-and-fringe. What is new? We’ll decide that as we go. What is fringe? Hey, it’s our party and we’ll cry if we want to.

New Canadiana :: PiG – Tragic Venus b/w Immanent Deity

PiG
Tragic Venus b/w Immanent Deity
(Campaign for Infinity)
Truro, NS
::web/sounds::

From the diocese of Aaron Levin:
On (possibly) their last release, PiG drill into a heady mix of miscreant-skiddery and Lorca-era Tim Buckley. It’s sundown at the crest of oblivion and PiG remain defiant, twisting the threads of their home-brewed, basement psychedelia for your voyeuristic pleasure. Their spastic death-punk has fermented into an outerworld sonomoly; a dialectic entombed by Matt Samways’ fearless mantra. “Tragic Venus”‘ piercing bass and shimmering clamour populate your neural pathways with the lysergic elements required to process the droning “Imminent Deity.” This new, indivisible sound is surrounded with “Outro”‘s industrial racket and solidifies their shrine within Canada’s fringe vortex. PiG remain a huge inspiration for Weird Canada. For that, and so much more, we will miss them dearly. XOXOGRIPXOXO.

New Canadiana :: Bronze Leaf – Bread Crumbs

Bronze Leaf
Bread Crumbs
(Champion City Records)
Edmonton, AB // Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

From the bronzed text of Aaron Levin:
From the wispy ashes of guitar soli’s earthic remains, Bronze Leaf’s lysergic embers warm our minds to the emerging angles within acid folk. Rooms fall silent as she conjures gentle finger-picked reverberations; lofty vocals hovering like ghosts above stretched hallways and vacant beaches. Armed with guitars, delay pedals, and looping mechanicals, Bronze Leaf joins the new wave of psychedelic folk artists transcending Canada into the bewildering nether-zone of fringe success. Catch her now while she remains within our ether!

New Canadiana :: The Ether – Folly

The Ether
Folly
(Patente)
Halifax, NS
::web/sounds::

From the eternal folly of Aaron Levin:
These lo-bit atonal HFX-heavyweights return with another chaotic excursion into audactic nullity. Wailing saxophones pierce through the murky guitar shredding as gravitrons of distortion warp every sinusoidal tendency; it’s an ear-biting display of The Ether’s magnetic live show, no simple feat for a five piece using every noise-making machine known to humankind. Their deconstructed blues number (“I Need You”) is unsane. Another superb die-cut from the folks at Patente. MUSTGRIP.

Induced Labour
Induced Labour
(Self Released)
Toronto, ON
::web/sounds::

From the forced pregnancy of Aaron Levin:
Frenetic, heavy, and relentless art-punk from Toronto featuring the gif-conjuring shrieking of illustrator and Weird Canada logo-creator Leslie Predy. Induced Labour’s debut c4 (!!) is a pulverizing tour through cassette-hell; a face-smashing, ankle-snapping, crouton-crushing puke-punk heaven. Gorge yourself in the glory of their ritual.

New Canadiana :: Mark Alexander McIntyre – Situs Inversus Totalis

Mark Alexander McIntyre
Situs Inversus Totalis
(Seductive Sounds)
Ottawa, ON
::web/sounds::

From the seductive text of Joni Sadler:
After playing in numerous Ottawa bands over the past decade, Mark Alexander McIntyre has finally gone and released a solo record. As it turns out, Situs Inversus Totalis was worth the wait: McIntyre’s slow-burn acid folk possesses a unique and eerie sense of timelessness that is rare in so much of the music being produced today. Waves of queasy feedback stand in nice contrast to simple acoustic guitar and sparse vocals, and the whole record – right down to its plain cardboard sleeve and Xeroxed liner notes – remains nicely minimal in style. Ultimately, McIntyre channels the influences of sonic bros like Greg Ashley and Sir Richard Bishop through a haze of druggy sadness so damn well that all we’re left wondering is why it took him so bloody long to make a solo album in the first place.

New Canadiana :: Secret Colours – Blackest Blackest

Secret Colours
Blackest Blackest
(Brotherhood Cassettes)
Halifax, NS
::web/sounds::

From the blackest black of Aaron Levin:
Totally washed-out cultic vibrations beam from every inch of Secret Colours’ magnetic debut. It’s the perfect weirdo basemental projection radiating from the brightest fields of cassette culture; blankets of ethereal synth, tape-warbled choralic vocals, and Tresvant sensitive low-end. From the brilliant mind of Evan Cardwell. Double grip!

New Canadiana :: Grimes – Halfaxa

Grimes
Halfaxa
(Arbutus Records // Self Released)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

From the cosmic slop of Aaron Levin:
If Grimes’ tour CDR (to be officially released via Arbutus on September 30th at Pop Montreal) is any indication, the cosmic-pop deity is transcending into a vocal-cruising eidolon of celestial proportions. Layers of wyspy vocals form the cooling galaxies of Halfaxa while her minimal drums synthesize Enja‘s lingering espers into a club anthem fit for the Restaurant at the End of the Universe. Or the Mos Eisley Cantina. Either way, Grimes’ future-stream sinusoids are peeling wigs.

New Canadiana :: Young Governor – Pizza Face

Young Governor
Pizza Face
(Scotch Tapes)
Toronto, ON
::web/sounds::

From the ate too many chocolate bars of Aaron Levin:
Young Governor soars to anthemic heights on this six minute post-pizza buffet. Its jangly rhythm bursts with gusto, jamming the radio glam treachery of cult heros into a reverb-soaked elucidation. This day-time special is crafted for all your teenage fantasies; let it seep into your pores and shake the foundation of your pubescent ethos. A fantastic voyage into 80s pop-punk anthemy. Hand-cut lathe on “pizza glass” by Scotch Tapes. Sounds rad at both speeds. Eat it up!

New Canadiana :: Jom Comyn – Balcony

Jom Comyn
Balcony
(Champion City Records)
Edmonton, AB
::web/sounds::

From the comyn-spiced balconies of James Goddard:
This EP from Edmonton’s Jom Comyn (sometimes Jim Cumming) speaks to the concerns of young adults in the 21st Century – I mean actual young adults, not the browsers of Gordon Kormanunemployment, cigarettes, sloppy romances, late-nights, and (of course) almost condemned balconies. The guitars carry the tunes lethargically; apathetic tones, sketchy feedback, and non-committal fuzz over dusty, stilted drumming. Jom’s vocals shine through the nest like a retired lounge singer; an odd, weathered voice spouting the words of a quarter-life savant. “You don’t know what you are doing until years after it’s through.” On Sunday morning, in a hungover haze, it all sounds like it might be the truth.

New Canadiana :: Play Guitar – Play Guitar

Play Guitar
Play Guitar
(Youth Club Records // Noyes // Coraille)
Montreal, QC // Halifax, NS // Whitehorse, YK
::web/sounds::

From the dead love of Jesse Locke:
Chiming and charming six-string jangle-pop moves from this aptly named quartet currently on tour across Canada. Following up the Cold Crystal Shield cassingle with a full-length eponymous effort, the band from three cities can now boast six record labels to its name (including Germany’s Coraille) and a pristine mastering job from none other than Chicago indie-rock vet Bob Weston. Male/female falsetto/hushed harmonies offset an onslaught of hooks and tricky licks, resulting in an ace set of tunes with endless replay value. RIYL: Let’s Active, Keep It Like A Secret and “I Am The Cancer.” Go see them at a bar, hot dog shop or house show near you!
