New Canadiana :: The Group Sound – Secret Girlfriend

The ebb and flow of washy guitars echoing across the Pacific form the most beautiful sunset of sweet lyrics on Secret Girlfriend. Dance on the horizon and cast the longest shining reflection that reaches your toes as you dip into the Group Sound. Love letters written in sand dunes on the warmest night in July remind you why you loved pop when you were young and thirsty. These road songs for a trip rise to the top of Mt. Fuji and scream “baby please don’t go!” as you skydive down to earth and land in a banana split.

Festivities :: SappyFest 2011

The small college town of Sackville, New Brunswick harbours a secret. Every summer while students shop for discount books in major cities, a cult-like gathering of outsiders convenes to celebrate strange sounds in large tents, vaudeville theatres, small town cinemas and railside taverns. Turning the concept of a multi-venue festival on its head each year, SappyFest finds not the alterna-side spaces where loud noises are welcome but puts all the plaid shirts, fuzz peddles and puddles of beer right on the main street. First hosting the reunited Eric’s Trip in 2006, Sappy has grown and grown. This year’s lineup promises not to disappoint, showcasing the luminaries of independent Canadian culture both new and old, familiar and not. Alongside as yet un-tauted gems such as Cannon Bros, Hash Jesus, SILKEN LAUMANN and Wooden Wives, this year’s lineup boasts sets by current Weird Canada favourites Jennifer Castle, Chad VanGaalen, Rich Aucoin, Gobble Gobble, Grimes and Quaker Parents. And that’s just the pop music. See you there?

Departures :: Bernard Bonnier – Casse-Tête Musique Concrète

After studying with musique concrète demigod Pierre Henry, Bernard booked it to Quebec City and brewed his incredibly forward-scheming proto-dance collage. Casse-Tête, literally translating to “Head-Breaker”, is a puzzling exploration of break-beat montage. Bernard scaffolds the boundaries of rhythmic sensation and pounds through scraps of sinusoidal decay, beating societies remnant audio into a violent drum-laden melee of modern-dance predication. No less revolutionary than the acid-house visions of Charanjut Singh, Bernard’s genius resides in pushing these limits from the forgotten snippets of sound permeating our everyday ether. Originals are tough; thankfully reissues exist. Canon grip.

New Canadiana :: JLK- Empty Spaces

JLK gets downright medieval on her latest cassette. Looping and layering wraithlike vocals with skin-flaying scraps of sandpaper guitar, she re-assembles each piece to create Burroughs-style cut-ups. The XX chromosome of Velvet Chrome has unveiled a sui generis sound in her fittingly desolate shreddery, akin to driving alone on a cactus-lined highway. Shedding genres like snake skins without stopping to gaze at ghosts of artists past, she leaves it all in the rear-view while plotting her next move. GRRRRRIIIIIPPPPP…

New Canadiana :: Babysitter – Tape IV

The latest chapter in the Babysitter’s club saga finds Victoria’s finest sticking to the plot with a few fresh twists. Tape IV’s revolution rock riff-o-rama is as gloriously busted as ever, teeming with teenage lobotomy jangle and howled manifestos to tear down the walls. Yet this time around, the band also dims the lights for a jellybean slow dance with your junior high squeeze, then smokes out the gym for the eight-minute blazer jam “Marijuana Overdrive.” Lock up your daughters and look for these hooligans crossing Canada in the fall.

New Canadiana :: Slim Twig // U.S. Girls – Split

An underground snake charmer melodizes from the catacombs of Olde England to a loungy baritone quiver blared simultaneously out of a helicopter on tour over a war-torn city jungle. Red velvet curtains that never part sway gently behind his confident voice, urging you to wonder what’s beyond yet remaining cryptic enough to immobilize you. Flip to a family reunion. You slip mushrooms. Cousin Megan is playing her doo-wop from under the pavilion while Uncle Max blasts RAWK from the El Dorado The mash turns your stomach until the ambrosia salad laughs at you, and you let it wash over. Bliss.

New Canadiana :: Chad VanGaalen – Diaper Island

Not a soul can predict the cascading disposition of Chad VanGaalen’s zany neurons. His fourth full length, curiously/awesomely titled Diaper Island, shies away from past electronic interferences to switch the focus towards thick, alt-rock minded studio production. Perhaps as an afterglow to his baroque noise-pop adornments for Women, VanGaalen maturely navigates between straightforward and dreamy, his mystical visions taking new shapes vivid as ever.

New Canadiana :: Young Truck // Man Made Hill – Work Stress // Disco Prison

Two sides of basemental groove thread Pleasence Records‘ latest three-three-one-three oblation. Young Truck assaults with vibronic angular disco, littering their rhythmic chaos with atonal shreddery and mystic digitalis. On the flip, wigs get a second pealing after dual doses of Man Made Hill’s tweaked bone. Hypothetical damage and degenerate groove spring Disco Prison into an ultraverse of mutant Prince and casio-Konrad. Heavy grippage.

New Canadiana :: BASKETBALL – Maw

Drifting outside the eternal ether, BASKETBALL absorb the consecrated reverberations continuously emanating from Gaea. Freebasing terra’s creative energies, Maw‘s resulting rhythmic reflection is a discultured bass breeder wet with lysergic sinusoids and falsetto hollerama. Dualic drummery and violent synth channel their creative vibrations earthward, subjecting us to a mirrored narrative thick with resplendent harmony. Go buck and grip their infinite drum dance to the motherland.

New Canadiana :: The Gooeys – Scary Black Cherry Nap

Craig Storm and his seasick sailors of the good ship Gooey bob, surf and wooze through puddles of organ-fried carnival candy paisley-pop puke on this cavity-rotting platter from the Cave. Moving past deadpan and directly onto dead, Storm sounds like he’d rather be filing his T4s than fronting this squadron of subterranean vets, roping in past and present card carrying members of Gaye Rage, Grown Ups and the mammy slappin’ Topless Mongos. Whether flipping herky jerk tempos like BBQ burgers or dipping scuba dive keys like the B-52s, this is the dictionary definition of quintessential, kiddies.
