New Canadiana :: La Part Maudite // Dios Mio! – Our Balls Are Like Dead Suns EP // Leçon practique d’hypnotisme

New Canadiana :: The Ether – Dead Scene Politics b/w 96 Tears

With infinite drones of granular noise, The Ether dismantle ? and the Mysterians “96 Tears” into blissful nihilism. It’s the perfect trajectory for the moodier garage-punk of the 21st century: manic threads of derisive tone, painful hollaramas, and the burnt guitar leads of a desolate future. The Ether remain a vision into an apocalyptic groove transcending metaphysical mediums in sinusoidal abandon. Get sicc with it.

Wyrd III :: Eternal Gratitude b/w Thanks!!!

At the climax of Wyrd III, during a liquor-license shut-down of Red Mass’ super-collab shred-fest, a crowd of maniac fans carried Famines-drummer Garrett Kruger out of Vancouver’s Waldorf Hotel chanting “We’re never gonna stop!” And while Garrett in-flight solo’d onto the world’s most dangerous street, we kept thinking: we will truly never stop.

There were so many highlights and so many amazing moments, each one buoyed by so many wonderful people. With such bountiful bodies of positive Wyrd reformation, we’d like to simply thank you. Thanks to every person who came and had a marvelous time. Thanks to every performer for being on the level and so supportive. And a huge thanks to the volunteers who carried the weight of Wyrd on their shoulder from city-to-city.

We commend and thank all who participated. As the moon fades, so the sun rises again. For all those who missed Wyrd III, we look forward to your vibrations in 2012. Wyrd IV is coming. As is Wyrd MTL in the next month. Help us carry the torch beyond the end of time.

PS – please post your favorite Wyrd III moments in the comments section below. We’ll start with ours.

PPS – if you have any photos, please send them to aaron@cantorrecords.com

Departures :: Brian Damage – Early Electronic Works (1983-1988)

Two years ago Damage laid this collection on me and I somehow only got to it recently, reflecting on the need to stem the tide of things COMING INTO my zone. I’ve written about his Industrial band Phycus over at Thee-Outernet, and Early Electronic Works (1983-1988) collects releases made during those years under the name Data Strangler in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Damage claims he was trying to combine Judas Priest and Men Without Hats, a sort of Canadian teen alchemy, but the results on the early version of “Refrigerators” sounds more like Red Krayola to me. So much brilliance here: an amazing basement vibe (apparently tracks were bounced between boomboxes and you can pretty much hear the wood panelling), crude synth punk, MB style electronic miniatures, synth pop, Kemberic tremolo’d organ zones and so on. Damage’s songcraft is tight and he employs a varité approach to his lyrics which at times are hilarious (“Big Man On Campus”), creepy (“Refrigerators”), tragi-comedic (“Tar Pond Monster”) and cyberpunkish “(Malfunction 54”). Here are two mp3s, but I imagine this is getting the wax treatment sooner than later.

New Canadiana :: Femminielli // Araignée – Chauffeur b/w Silvia

Fixture Records’ first foray into wax is a serious stunner. Sharing a split 7” with himself, Bernardino Femminielli presents a song from two different projects, revealing the dual sides of his musical personality. “Chauffeur” not only aligns itself with the best Duran Duran song but also cops its cult vibes from Carpenter scores of the ’80s late nite multiplex. Layering sensual whispers on a bed of chilly synths, it’s a leather daddy sex cave you won’t want to escape. On the flip, “Silvia” introduces the impassioned soap opera pop of his Araignée offshoot, all shuffling beats, electro gleams and water-damaged vocals, and equally jaw-dropping. Get your mitts on this now.

New Canadiana :: Velvet Chrome – Hall of Mirrors

Just in time for tour, Frank Hobo and the infamous guitar shredder JLK drop this CD (remember those?) of haunted ramblings down the dustbowl backroads. As Velvet Chrome, the power couple combines sensibilities to create a toxic concoction of No Wave skree and ugly Americana laced with hits from the cosmic blotter. Though the majority of these workouts are propelled by primitive drum beats and detuned six-string strategies, seven-minute drifter “Glass Maze” is a primarily vocal-based drone, and closer “Miles Away” is one of the most beautiful pieces of Motorik bliss this side of Neu! 75. A merch table must.

New Canadiana :: Chevalier Avant Garde – Haircut 7”

Admittedly, Postcards’ demise was a little pinch to the heart, but this self-released lathe-cut single celebrates their rebirth into contemporary grounds of retro minimalism. The A side’s About It sets the tone, spotlighting the cold and bare thumping stabs of sequenced bass synth. The flipside picks up the pace, yet the vocals and atmosphere remain as cool and removed as can be. Ditching the rock band realm, Chevalier Avant Garde expectantly manage to distill their past displays of mysterious, expressive – and excellent – songwriting into the squarer shape of YouTube-revived European minimal synth singles of the ’80s.

New Canadiana :: Cocobeurre – Landing
