New Canadiana :: Ayal Senior – Hebrew Lips

With a Perhacsian flare for vocal layery, Ayal Senior burns through sixteen candles of lysergic phantasia on this album of “SONGS.” Hebrew Lips is a manic rally between meditative passages within the folk cosmos and a perturbed flexing of the pop continuum, most of this accomplished via wavering and unsettling synth drones amongst a clamor of guitar strokes and choral phasing. Heavy basement vibes permeate every surface in ways not heard since the moon reached its Stone Harbour. Beautiful die-cut packaging care-of the illustrious Beniffer Editions.

New Canadiana :: Bad Vibrations // Bloodhouse – Bad Blood

Halifax l’a, l’affaire.

New Canadiana :: Hot & Cold – Conclusion / Introduction

From the womb to the tomb, brothers Simon and Josh Frank are united by bonds both synthetic and familial. Fused together as electro-creep two-piece Hot & Cold, they shudder and scuttle like goth insects under strobelight. This six-song c20 from Beijing’s Rose Mansion Analog re-wires Martin Rev fuzztones with pulsating electronics, classic Hooky basslines and abrasive echo vox. Another essential release from this clan.

New Canadiana :: Krang – Speed of Tent b/w Spirit Animal

Fall back into a hazy groove and get enveloped in Krang’s tangible smog. Soulful, desolate, driving, soaring, otherworldly – the Edmonton band is in a constant state of psych-flux, but you’re able to completely absorb the sonic explosion; picture spiraling through a wormhole while being aurally blasted from all sides. From meandering builds to garage energy to Sabbath-styled riffioso, you’re always involved and immersed. Krang goes full on, so don’t feel this fringe from the fringe – dive deep into these murky waters.

New Canadiana :: Lab Coast // Extra Happy Ghost!!! – Lab Coast / Extra Happy Ghost!!!

There’s always been a certain charm to bedroom recordings. Both Lab Coast and Extra Happy Ghost!!! wear their affinity for this homespun aesthetic on their sleeves, and it’s this shared dedication to lo-fi home recording that makes them an ideal pair for this split from Calgary’s Saved by Vinyl. Lab Coast tears a page straight out of the Guided by Voices handbook with a pair of sundrenched slacker-pop tunes, while Extra Happy Ghost!!! slows things on the flipside with a couple of decidedly more introspective tracks. But even when the songs begin to chill out, the fuzz and jangle remains strong in the mix, reminding us that this is the sound coming from the basements and bedrooms of our own land. Robert Pollard would be proud, and you know what? So should we.

New Canadiana :: Aunty Panty – AP EP

Scanner-destroying sans-wave from the antagonizing wastelands of Saskatoon. Aunty Panty’s digital halo debut is a dualic descent into derelict guitar destruction and vocal annihilation. Hammered strikes against their metallic strings clangor amongst the concrete waves of red-lined vocals and four-four drummery. A severe peak into the marginalized sounds running rampant in our wheat-filled prairies.

New Canadiana :: Foxes in Fiction – Alberto

There is a new soft embodied by Foxes in Fiction. Warm flourishes of marino-laced lysergia, tiki-tap drum machines, and an easy coastal choral wash Alberto into a definitive mellow, soaking your woes in a bath of popular splendor. Being filed somewhere between Eubank and Hall and Oats, it’s hard to believe such a soundscape survive the cold-hearted streetz™ of Toronto. Grip fast while their satiated waves still wash our shores.

New Canadiana :: Holy Mount – Breeze Blows West

Surely titled for Sleep’s 1993 opus rather than Alejandro Jodorowsky’s transgressive 1973 film, Holy Mount’s tectonic psych plods with glacial reserve, never afraid to wallow in an especially oppressive rut. Eschewing Iommi’s blues or Khanate’s in-the-reds, “Breeze Blows West”’s palette is decidedly comprised of greys. Here, absentee vocals recall Cobain on a bathtub date with diazepam, while drudging guitars forgo heaven-licking stacks for the well-loved tinnitus of a blown tube amp. Still, pentimenti — the paint beneath the paint — is what counts. At times, its pounding backbeat threatens to veer into rust-belt urgency, but Holy Mount’s steel-and-concrete dreariness is quintessentially Torontonian. All skyscrapers and glass ceilings, “Breeze Blows West” is best served cold.
