New Canadiana :: Bitter Fictions – The First Book of Electricity

New Canadiana :: Total Crush – The Chronicnomicron

Sprawling, voltronic psych-punk featuring executives from Ottawa’s greatest little secret (read: Bruised Tongue). Their droning free magyk is buried beneath unruly synthesizer tantrums and transdimensional holleramas that trace vibrant visions of Ottawa’s translucent underground. The tape works best as an imaginative tool, granting insight into the wild nest of bewilderment fermenting at Bruised Tongue HQ. Ten rough live recordings with one epic twenty-four minute jam. Unique packaging featuring a cassette nestled within a folded version of this amazing poster.

New Canadiana :: Crystal Swells – Goethe Head Soup

What do you do when you live in the ‘burbs and don’t want to waste your life smoking outside the local Mac’s? Toss on your baseball cap, turn on the Salvation Army microphones and start “Wakin’ up the Neighbours”. Crystal Swells’ ‘Ridge rock stands as a testament to the power of suburban detachment, throwing Blink 182 and Spacemen 3 through a coffee grinder and coming up with just the right mix of snotty attitude kept on track by massive backbeats and gut-searing guitar leads. Exuding a youthful Teenage Shutdown LP energy, Goethe Head Soup is stacked with syrupy vocal lines hiding under feedback peaks and red-lined valleys, with occasional Lally-isms and the almost obligatory no-chord garage-jam of a title track. “Waco, Wasilla, Waikiki” takes all of this, compresses it, and proceeds to grind and spatter teen lust all over the fiendish beach party it emanates from. Essential Vancouver.

New Canadiana :: NEEDLES//PINS – Drop It b/w Kalifornia Korner

While compiling the Bloodstains Across British Columbia 7”, I asked bands to recommend their favourite new Vancouver band that I hadn’t heard of yet, and almost everyone came up with the same answer. NEEDLES//PINS fit nicely in the modern garage-pop cosmos currently being mined in Ottawa (White Wires, Steve Adamyk) and the Bay Area (Nobunny, Bare Wires, etc). While it can be easy to dismiss genre bands, NEEDLES//PINS gets it right where so many bands fail: hooks and songwriting. Incredible songcraft is at work here, both songs being the winning combination of instantly likable and infinitely memorable. Top notch stuff, highly recommended.

New Canadiana :: Zachtautomaat – Smart Candle

Dense, hallucinogenic migrations emenate from the spinning magnetic strips tucked inside Zachtautomaat’s phased journey through pressure-wave manipulation. Each side is a colossal trip through transcended flares, beat cut-ups, major-key Kraut drones, and swathes of library dramatics. The tape defies all classification and straddles a wicked line between beats/samples and live shredding. Completely unassuming, understated, and unforgettable, with an extra make ‘em say un for the unique packaging. Must grip++

Video :: ARCSECONDS – Astronauts [dir. Moduli TV]

Moduli TV, the videophonic arm of Hobo Cult Records, has been pumping out eye-piercing visual manipulations at an astounding rate; fifty videos (and counting) in the last nine months, an average of almost two videos a week. Their latest, for Calgary-artist ARCSECONDS, transcends the beat-up betamax manipulation, mutating the moon-lading granular into electronic waves of cosmic debris. The trip is a brilliant match to the ascending harrow of “Astronauts,” whose mellow genesis gradually descends into ambient revelations.

New Canadiana :: Service:Fair – It Ended Badly

Killing it with laid-back breezy, catchy downers and high-strung musical exclamations, Catlin Kuzyk and co. create an immensely addictive mix of swamp-sheened pop-rock gems. Evincing energetic melancholy and homemade warmth, this Brazilian Moneyennaire effortlessly belts out strangled wails and powerful vocal refrains that are always on the move between sadness and excitement. Though it’s ostensibly a contemplation on failed romance, It Ended Badly is a colossal success. The best way to listen to this driving semi-sloppy hook-filled revisionist pop grunge is on repeat.

Please Welcome our New Kings

We made a call for interns and our response was magical. The e-mails flooded my inbox. I could not keep up. I go to sleep guilt-ridden, fearing the ire of enthusiastic applicants whose e-mails have gone unanswered. Nevertheless, the trek continues and in the process we’ve found two beautiful people to take on the roles of Managing Editor and Social Marketer. For photos and other sexy content, please read more about them in the contributors section.

Please welcome Jesse Locke and Jenni Roberts with open arms. They’ve poured hours and hours into Weird Canada and have (and will continue to) grow Weird Canada into the publishing behemoth it is sure to become.

Introducing…

Managing Editor Jesse Locke

Jesse has been a long-time contributor to Weird Canada and co-founder of the magnificent Texture Magazine. With prior experience in the discipline of managing energetic writers at Beatroute, Fast Forward Magazine, and other printed matter, Jesse comes into the position of Managing Editor with a tremendous amount of real-world experience. Since taking the reigns Weird Canada has seen some fresh faces (an introduction to come soon!) and welcomed the addition of new content and features. That sounds like an overly professional way of saying Jesse is rad.

(The Managing Editor is responsible for organizing and managing the contributors, ensuring the timely delivery of content, and generating ideas for new content)

Social Marketer Jenni Roberts

If you follow us on twitter or join our Facebook page than you’ve probably seen the timely postings of Jenni Roberts. Jenni has been an Edmonton staple in the music scene for years and I was really, really excited when I saw her name pop in my mailbox. She’s got a knack for metrics, way too much experience with excel spreads and an endless supply of enthusiasm.

(The Social Marketer is responsible for promoting Weird Canada through every social channel possible.)

Ex Libris :: Before the End [James Kirkpatrick // Thesis Sahib]

The colorful splotches and spazmodic robot-rap of London’s James Kirkpatrick get the deluxe treatment with this bodacious book+7″ combo. According to intros from Jesse Dangerously and Robyn Metcalfe, Kirkpatrick has been perfecting his unique visual/sound craft since pasting up early aughts tags on the streets of Halifax. Here, his playfully abstract creations — oddly reminiscent of ice cream, hamburgers and/or submarines — and music-spewing sound sculptures are showcased in gallery-caliber blow-ups. The sky blue slab of vinyl and accompanying 16-song download card provide a fittingly tweaked soundtrack via the fiery rhymes of Kirkpatrick’s alter-ego Thesis Sahib, bumped over porno bass and Game Boy™ bleeps, sweeps and creeps. It’s the perfect no-brow coffee table package for discerning weirdos.
