New Canadiana :: Auld Beak – 4 Songs

The genre forgery at Bart Records continues to astound. Gripping from the nest that birthed 90s radicalia, Saskatoon’s Auld Beak seamlessly blend their sinusoids into a hurly burly of 90s catch, screaming intimacy, and post-hardcore guitar wizardry. The result is bewildering and addictive, driving you to spend hours hopelessly picking apart their orthogonal streams. Definitely something brewing at Bart Records HQ (see Stalwart Sons). Strange currents indeed!

New Canadiana :: Shortpants Romance – Shotgun Divorce

Bizarrement cathartique.

New Canadiana :: Jom Comyn – Comynge Tegythere

Jom Comyn takes another giant leap forward in the development of his own micro-genre: snowglobe-folk. Guitar lines still sometimes eddy like slow-floating sediment, settling gently along a song’s backbone, but Comynge Tegythere‘s meteorological sphere harbors more devastating weather as well, sometimes verging on sheer white-out. Layers of noise stratify and coalesce, parting curtain-like to reveal full-bodied songs, scuzz-jazz meanderings, and hangdog laments in Jim Cumming’s signature baritone — a voice which has never held more weight than it does in the ghostly haunting number, “Been Down Blues.” Jim buffs winter sadness to a dull glow of acceptance in a city where the snow never leaves. Shake hard. [Packaged with an elaborate zine for those who attended the tape release.]

New Canadiana :: Babysitter – Babysitter II

Leaping over formidable heaps of genre-fuckery, Victoria’s Babysitter have eclipsed the cresting waves of our modern pop singularity. Babysitter II is an enslaving excursion into hybridized pop-punk and thrash-it-yourself hard-rock with the wildest hook-filled gruntfoolery that-side of anywhere. Tuneless jangles permeate the anthemic hooks (“never gonna die! never gonna die! never gonna die!“) while ripping leads, busted solos, and unmitigated rhythmania hurl Babysitter II through your aural ethosphere. A real favorite around Weird Canada HQ, spawning multiple e-mail threads and putting into question my e-mail organization skills (lesson: if you don’t hear back, try again). GRIPORDIE!!!!

New Canadiana :: Headaches – It Sounds Like

Since transporting himself from Edmonton to Toronto, über-talented lensman Landon Speers has transported listeners in turn with speaker-straining electronic meditations. Criss-crossing genres and challenging preconceptions, his aliases include Headaches, Bad Dad and John Bidet Ramesses. Speers’ latest CDR — the full title of which is longer than this paragraph — utilizes aleatoric strategies to meld 96 Casio tone bank samples into a semi-improvised monolith, drifting from chin-stroking Mutek minimalism to fast-paced beats fit for the Viking. Recently reissued by Audio Gourmet.

Ex Libris :: Nü Sensae Fanclub Newsletter #1

Vancouver’s Nü Sensae have gone the extra megameter in artist-fanperson relations by sending every member of their fanclub a newsletter, holiday greeting, and membership card. On top of tour dates and upcoming releases, the newsletter takes a turn for the weird by introducing a Nü Sensae Tattoo (“cut it out and take to yr local parlour”), Ask Nü Sensae section, expose titled Albums We Love, hilarious interview with Broken Water, and medium-difficulty Crossword (“Meth raging oregon town”, “Streisand as a pal”, and “Smell Heaven”). An obvious labor of love in two stapled, xeroxed pages. For those interested in the grippage, e-mail: nusensae [at] gmail [dot] com. But don’t forget to write them back!

New Canadiana :: Rebecca’s Room – The Burned CD

New Waterford’s bedroom-punk heeds no boundaries. Fuzzed-out mono-pop, warped keyboard layers and oscillating noise behind shambling slackertude all play together, seamlessly blending the last 20 years of college rock, lo-fi jams and punk aggression. Rebecca’s Room keep it interesting and surprising, and this CD’s eight songs don’t even seem to scratch the surface of the band’s anthemic, monotonically drawled out bangers. “Cherry” embodies youthful exuberance and wasted nights of ingested meaning, while “All That You Say” has Dylan-esque blasé and hooks for days. These upper-downer jams mix with more contemplative fare to bring a full serving of the frantic but bored, laid back psych-acoustic numbers and blown-out noise pop.

New Canadiana :: Freak Heat Waves // Funs – Demos Tape

Like a root beer float melting on your flip flops, Freak Heat Waves — the latest project from Medicine Hat’s finest — bring the faded beach bum jams with this odds ‘n’ sods collection. Scrappy, slight and seemingly recorded with minimal stress, it’s the particular style of mellow that comes part and parcel with Victoria and truly sounds best on cassette. On the flip, Thomas Di Ninno’s solo project Funs offers its own homespun charm via rambling guitar solos, grooving horns and a lazy David Berman drawl. Steady coastin’…

New Canadiana :: No UFO’s – Mind Control

No UFO’s gestating modular reflections continue to mount the impressive fortress of ambient perfection. Radiating from the disturbing lair of Winnipeg’s Dub Ditch Picnic, their latest magnetic phenomenon is a heavy slug of new age perturbations. Phased distortions of aberrant horns cruise into arpeggiated abandon, parting synthetic waters for a new cult of electron. Side two digs deeper into the sub-90s consciousness, grinding our sensors with a heady cut-up of Fingers-esque clurb bangers. Totally and unequivocally rad.

New Canadiana :: WHOOP-Szo – What I Dream is Where I Live

What I Dream is Where I Live will toss you into accidental chatter. It’s warm, hazy strumming inviting conversation. Yet, this is no shrinking violet. It makes radical declarations with pummeling rock; the feedback hand gestures and swirling synth washes robbing your attention. Look away and it’ll smite you with strange pop projectiles, swaying you back into its bewildering dialogue. This royal city wonder features members from ESBC.
