New Canadiana :: Fist City – Hunting You

Fist City
Hunting You
(Dead Beat Records)
Lethbridge, AB
::web/sounds::

From the meth municipality of Aaron Levin:
The gnarly, driving pop sinusoids of Lethbridge’s Fist City have finally entombed themselves in one eternal polyvinyl groove. Their catch drips in the ecstatic distortion flowing through the Southern Albertan hotbed, but it’s Hunting You‘s torrid leads and dualic vocals that make them a beacon for all things adjective-punk. Well tuned heads will be plugged into their ardent pop sensibilities and otherworldly weirdness, levitating their grey matter to the next level of pop consciousness; a B-Side burner you’ll be playing in the shower, popping on a two-wheeler, and jamming down main street throwing fists and launching space rockets. Quintessential grippage from the small library of beautiful no-field Canadiana.

New Canadiana :: Dead Ghosts – Dead Ghosts

Dead Ghosts
Dead Ghosts
(Floridas Dying)
Vancouver, BC
::web/sounds::

From the living dead of Aaron Levin:
Bursting from the desperate vaults of R&R’s discrete past, Dead Ghosts is a shattering testament to the janglophone origins of pop. Reverberated country twang, phantasmic R&B, gnarly jangled garage, and indelible pop hooks bespeckle this game-changing thesis, throwing a Hegelian bomb into your square neighbor’s pool party. Grab the telephone, kick-down the door, wave your 4-4 and keep yelling: pop music ain’t gonna hit me no more. There ain’t nothing new without something old so grip it all while you’re still here to party.

New Canadiana :: Etienne O’Leary – Musiques de Films (1966 – 1968)

Etienne O’Leary
Musiques de Films (1966 – 1968)
(Tenzier)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

From the southern chromo of Aaron Levin:
The Montreal-born Etienne O’Leary escaped Quebec’s Quiet Revolution to partake in the burgeoning underground cinema of late-60s France. Unique to his filmmaking trade was Etienne’s self-taught abilities to compose soundtracks to his films, using primarily a tape recorder, harmonium, and prepared piano. The resulting control over image and sound allowed O’Leary to realize the dense, suffocating atmosphere of his “diary films”; transparent cut-ups, sharp drags of visceral sexuality, and the wrenching drone of his harmonium are constants during O’Leary’s exposition. The hedonism of his Parisian excursion is fully realized in Day Tripper when their hyper-sexualized day-time boredoms are set to a proto-plunderphied cut-up of Screaming Jay Hawkings and Nancy Sinatra. While only producing three films (Day Tripper (1966, 16mm, 9min), Homeo (1967, 16mm, 38min), and Chromo’Sud (1968, 16mm, 21min)), O’Leary’s legacy survives thanks to Tenzier’s fantastic 180g Vinyl LP + DVD reissue, capturing O’Leary’s films and soundtracks for the first time since their emergence in 1968. Certified mega-GRIP!!

New Canadiana :: Shearing Pinx – Live Thunder

Shearing Pinx
Live Thunder
(Bruised Tongue)
Vancouver, BC
::web/sounds::

From the living thunder of Joni Sadler:
After last year’s killer Weaponry LP, Shearing Pinx one-up themselves with this live recording from a gig in Thunder Bay. Anyone who’s been lucky enough to witness these Vancouverites tear up a basement on one of their cross-country ventures knows that their live show is a blistering, noisy affair; this tape is a testament to the sheer distorted force that is Shearing Pinx in their element. Choice cuts from Weaponry take on a whole new sense of urgency when they’re drenched in this much grit and fuzz. Get your hands on the tape or better yet – catch the band next time they hit your town and watch this shit go down in real life.
