Ex Libris :: The Dead Raven Book

The Dead Raven Book
Illustrated by: Dave Particelli
(Type Unlimited)
Yellowknife, NWT
Published: 1985

From the creative death of Aaron Levin:
With over fifty illustrations of cruel and unusual methods to deal with the North Canadian raven scourge, The Dead Raven Book is your go-to guide for creative disposal. Who thought ravens could be used for shotgun holsters, candlesticks, or even bathtub soap trays? I certainly didn’t. But Dave Particelli did. And he did so in dedication to “Heather… and the Raven who stole her lunch.” Published by the obscure Type Unlimited (operating out of Yellowknife (1,500km from Edmonton)) and loaned to me from the library of Marie Lef. [All links above the last one contain scans from the book.]

New Canadiana :: U.S. Girls // Dirty Beaches – Split 7″

U.S. Girls // Dirty Beaches
Split 7″
(Sibling Sex)
Philadelphia, USA // Montreal, QC
::web/sounds:: // ::web/sounds::

From the american shunnery of Aaron Levin:
Dirty Beaches’ low-bit explorations through reverb hell have reached an all-time high on the synesthesia scale. Bubbling, smokey pulses of burnt low-end colour his spectrum of hazy crooning and rolling bass-lines like never before. The proto-apocalyptic rock and roll has become a psychotic ride through slow, droning waves of mystery and fear. Songs like “16 Coaches Long Akai Tape” will permeate your grey matter and desecrate any low-light associations, mercilessly running through your mind onwards. The split 7″ is beautifully paired with Philadelphia’s U.S. Girls.

New Canadiana :: Seth Smith – New Problems

Seth Smith
New Problems
(Yo Rodeo)
Halifax, NS
::web/sounds::

From the reducible logic of James Goddard:
Gottlob Frege committed his life to one problem: demonstrating that mathematics is reducible to logic. With New Problems Seth Smith, takes a break from dealing with his regular problem to tackle some amazing new ones. The album creates its own geometric space, a slowly unfolding shape built of tape-hiss, song fragments, actual songs and found sound. The warm strum of the guitar, the unfaithful percussive notes, and the other near constant noises consume the listener like Notes From The Underground or Dreamies. In one particularly evocative moment Smith presents us with a crescendoing series of voice-mail messages. Ultimately, Frege died without finding the solution to his problem. Smith, on the other hand, appears to have discovered a fruitful new direction for exploration.

Everything Irrelevant :: Holzkopf Tour Diary

Holzkopf Tour Diary
Wherein Texture Magazine follows the journeys of Jake Hardy
::web/sounds::

From the private eyes of Aaron Levin:
If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, the ongoing Holzkopf Tour Diary is being posted weekly on Texture Magazine. Vancouver’s Holzkopf is a wildly imaginative exploration in the dance scene of the heaviest order. Having seen his life performance several times, I can only imagine what streams of energies he will cross during his European jaunt.

New Canadiana :: Chik White – Highest Tide

Chik White
Highest Tide
(Divorce Records)
Head of Chezzetcook, NS
::web/sounds::

From solo shreddery of Aaron Levin:
Divorce Records CEO takes off to the coast and blows out a wild set of solo Jew’s Harp shreddery, leaving us with eight-teen minutes of reverberated oralic intensity. Siamese sinusoids of deep twang and chaotic warble form a meditative sheen of mystic harmony that will entrance and enlighten. Very few copies left, so grip while the night mirror lasts!

New Canadiana :: Ruddy Guy – Best of Microcassette Archives

Ruddy Guy
Best of Microcassette Archives
(Self Released)
Vancouver, BC
::web/sounds::

From teenage surgery of Aaron Levin:
Blown-, hallowed-, adjective’d-out basement moves from this Vancouver-via-Calgary mystery. Immediately addictive juvenile pop frequencies with an imagination rarely seen in the genre emanate from the compilation of 4-track demos recorded between 2008-2009. The dreamy, fragile soundescapes will drift through your mind, leaving traces of Ruddy Guy’s pop agility in every neural transmitters. I’m not really sure how you can grip this, but you should try.

New Canadiana :: Sean Nicholas Savage – Mutual Feelings (of Respect and Admiration)

Sean Nicholas Savage
Mutual Feelings (of Respect and Admiration)
(Arbutus Records)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

From the distant dancing of Jesse Locke:
DISCO DOESN’T SUCK. As perpetual Weird Canada favourite Sean Savage attests, the d-word doesn’t have to signify the brothers Gibb, a teenaged Travolta, or in the immortal words of Van Dyke Parks, “white boy pepper grinder madness.” Instead, Savage gives us swoon-worthy strings (with arrangements from the Silly Kissers’ David Carriere plus guest vox from singer Jane Penny), glittery synths, beachy bongos, and a soft-rock disco dancehall update to his classic pop romanticism. Turns out the Parisian night suit fits Savage perfectly.

New Canadiana :: Bummer High – Bummer High

Bummer High
Bummer High
(Southpaw Records)
Vancouver, BC

From the wintering heights of Aaron Levin:
Wispy, dusted country of an ilk only brewed north of the border. Way north. Snowy cowboys crossing the infinite tundra, riding their horses into the cold oblivion. With sharp stabs of frozen twang, reverberating beneath harrowing vocals recorded in the bowels of an ice cave, Bummer High’s debut cassette gives you a glimpse into the weathered lives beneath coats of frozen leather.
