New Canadiana :: Pas Chic Chic – 12″ EP

Pas Chic Chic
12″ EP
(Semprini Records)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

New Canadiana :: D’EON // Macintosh – Swans Covers

D’EON // Macintosh
Swans Covers
(Palimpsest)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

From the palimpest of Jesse Locke:
Weird Canada’s love for all things D’EON continues with this four-track cassette of Swans covers from the good folks at Palimpsest Magazine. Much like Raymond Biesinger’s immaculately typefaced releases for his berserker garage duo The Famines, a tonne of care went into the design of this stylish little art object. The extensive liner notes from Play Guitar’s Jackson Macintosh are necessary, going so far as to provide a spot-on comparison of the synth-fluted update of “A Screw” to Jay Z’s “Big Pimpin’”. Indeed, D’EON adds fresh flair to Swans’ original soul-crushers, re-contextualizing Michael Gira’s sadistic lyrics and devastating delivery with ethereal washes of electronics, stuttering beats and his own Downy soft vocals. Alas, nothing can make “Cop” anything less than horrific. Grippeth hurr.

New Canadiana :: Sans AIDS – Loaners

Sans AIDS
Loaners
(Bart Records)
Edmonton, AB
::web/sounds::

From the stoop of Aaron Levin:
Sans AIDS continues to explore the gnarled fringes of our pop continuum, welding their aggro-pop catch into the grey matter lurking behind our ears. Waves of frenetic tremolo glint off the trademark bass drones and sultry tom-snare combos, combing their complex pop sensibilities into prom-worthy anti-glam. Loaners shines with a rusty glare, twisting your aural signals into the deep nostalgia hiding behind every mirror.

New Canadiana :: Moonwood – Coal Aberrations

Moonwood
Coal Aberrations
(Arachnidiscs Recordings)
Toronto, ON
::web/sounds::

From the mitigated burial grounds of Aaron Levin:
Meditative ritual-waves emanate freely from this ethnic-laced excursion into the disparate recesses of freeform sonic consciousness. The aggregation of psychic minds centered around Jakob Rehlinger coagulate and form Moonwood, which includes Weird Canada favorite Andrew MacGregor amongst a plethora of freaks from the North American underground. Droning psychedelic guitars, piercing bursts of free-jazz angularity, and elastic harmonies resonate within a tomb of religious reverb, committing grande sins against our modern digitalis. The trip lasts 70 minutes and is available in a limited edition of 25 lino block printed and hand-stamped discs. GRIPPED.

New Canadiana :: D’EON – Palinopsia

D’EON
Palinopsia
(Hippos in Tanks)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

From the plainopsimania of Jesse Locke:
In the months after melting minds during Wyrd Alberta this April, Haligonian turned Montrealer Chris D’eon has ascended to new levels of spiritual unity. This week sees the long-awaited physical manifestation of his Palinopsia LP, and unsurprisingly, it’s just as beguiling as catching the cosmic joker in the flesh. Cleanse yourself in the shimmering waters of the broke-but-blissed anthem “Recession Proof ($40 Pay Cheque)” and incandescent g-funk of “Keep The Faith”, then level-up for the war-as-videogame banger “Kill a Man With a Joystick in Your Hand.” Refracting the squiggly synths of A Rainbow In Curved Air through the prism of 1990s House and R&B, D’eon conjures a kaleidoscopic ying yang of the past and future in posi vibed embrace. [Levin's Note: GOAT 2010. Grip an album with a credit card in your hand.]

GOBBLE GOBBLE
Wrinklecarver b/w Nemo
(National Archive of Records)
Edmonton, AB

From the neo-fabric of Aaron Levin:
Shards of electrostatic brilliance pepper the cover of GOBBLE GOBBLE’s prodigious digi-pop wonder. Their latest 7″, which has permanently littered Weird Canada HQ with a glorious supply of sprinkles, will meld to your subpopconsciousness, becoming the immutable neon barnacle bursting infinite within every spurt of creative marvel. Nothing is more perennial than its majestic polyvinyl form blasting sinusoids at 45 rpm. “Wrinklecarver” is beyond hyperbole. TRIPPGRIP.

Departures :: The Plastic Cloud – Shadows Of Your Mind b/w Dainty General Rides

The Plastic Cloud
Shadows Of Your Mind b/w Dainty General Rides
(Allied Records)
Bay Ridges, ON
Originally Released: 1967

From shadowy mind of Aaron Levin:
I can imagine the face-melt spreading across Canada as unhip DJs first heard The Plastic Cloud’s debut single. The sunny-side pop geniality had already taken hold by 1967, but The Plastic Cloud were ready to lift new listeners into unknowable heights. Bludgeoning first timers with aggressive, searing guitar leads, off-kilter crooning, and droning guitar jangle, it’s easy to see how “Shadows Of Your Mind” has become the best psychedelic song written in Canada. Their journey embodies all the quintessential lysergic chemistry, twisting the temporal hourglass and tuning every nerd to the new world frequency. While their album sells for hundreds of dollars and is considered a classic of the genre, hip teenagers can still cop originals of this single for under fifty bucks. Released on the legendary Allied Records.

New Canadiana :: CORSE – CORSE

CORSE
CORSE
(Self Released)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

From the corsage of Jesse Locke:
Running parallel but all too rarely overlapping with Montreal’s many other status quo-challenging subsets, a cluster of avant-jazz, electroacoustic and free improv freedom fighters can be found tucked inside the crevices. With their set-up of trumpet, trombone, drums and laptop, the mighty CORSE are prime specimens of this class, blitzkrieging (relatively) recognizable instrument sounds with a blizzard of computerized bleeps, swirls, chirps and garbled vocals. Recorded live over three days at experimental music hotspot L’Envers and painstakingly tweaked in post-production for many moons afterwards, the quartet’s eponymous CD is a challenging, off-kilter yet consistently engaging listen. Of course.
