Departures :: MC A-Okay – DOPE M.O.B

MC A-Okay
DOPE M.O.B
(In Time)
Edmonton, AB
Originally Released: 1991

From the random career raps of Christopher Bateman:
Considering our distance from Hip Hop’s 80′s epicentre, you can hardly blame Edmonton for taking so long to start rapping. More than a decade after the Sugarhill Gang kicked down the door wavin’ the Kaopectate, Edmonton’s MC A-Okay amassed a crew of West-enders to lay-down what would become some of Edmonton’s earliest rap recordings. A-Okay’s DOPE M.O.B demo is super-impressive, sounding like a random from any American city (read: Eric B and Rakim) and includes classic posse cuts from the DOPE (Disciples Of Poetic Expression) Mob, hard raps about being a drug dealer (“Guess Who’s Coming to Your Town”), and your basic pop-rap fan-fare (“Move the Groove” was eventually picked up for the successful-in-Canada We United to Do Dis album by Simply Majestic). With as few as 20 copies made (my copy was even found missing the actual cassette!) DOPE M.O.B stands as a rare and wonderful view into the beginnings of a prairie-town’s rep. Essential back-cover scan. Yes, that’s a recycled Parental Advisory sticker.

New Canadiana :: JAZZ – BURNT

JAZZ
BURNT
(Self Released)
Edmonton, AB
::web/sounds::

From the burnt riddims of Jesse Locke:
On JAZZ’s debut c8, Weird Canada overlord Aaron Levin — backed by pals from Gobble Gobble, Dropping Out and the Wicked Awesomes! — channels his hyperbolic written enthusiasm into quadro-spazzed blink-and-you’ll-miss-‘em ragers. Fall might be creeping into winter, but international jangle-punk superhits like “Your Stuff”, “Cowboy” and especially the stupidly catchy “Summer” will bring you right back to the glorious (hot) dog days. Bonus points for the über creepy cover photo of Levin Senior and his leather-clad ladyfriend. Frettin’ about conflicts of interest is for chumps…

New Canadiana :: Mess Folk – Modern Man 7″

Mess Folk
Modern Man 7″
(Plastic Spoon Records)
Sydney, NS
::web/sounds::

From the modern methods of Aaron Levin:
Another strange tangent for Sydney’s unruly mastodon whose flagrant exposé into rock’s genetic grammar will drop needles and crank heads. The tar-pond ensemble jumped into the studio for a deluxe release on France’s Plastic Spoon Records, resulting in a strangely clear vision into the damaged mind of lead songwriter Philip Tarr; blistering hard-rock riding a drug-laced 70s high cut with modern nihilism and philosophical solos. RIPPIN’.

New Canadiana :: Félix de l’Étoile – Le Mystérieux Prisme en Lit et la Saga d’Ator Bacham

Félix de l’Étoile
Le Mystérieux Prisme en Lit et la Saga d’Ator Bacham
(Jeunesse Cosmique)
Montreal, PQ
::web/sounds::

New Canadiana :: Meta Gruau – Tendre et mauve

Meta Gruau
Tendre et mauve
(Flange Patrol)
Montreal, PQ
::web/sounds::

New Canadiana :: Jesuslesfilles – Une Belle Table

Jesuslesfilles
Une Belle Table
(Self Released)
Montreal, PQ
::web/sounds::

From the jangly jangle of Jesse Locke:
With their wiry guitars, hopped-up hooks and Fin du Monde-soaked boy-girl vocals, Jesuslesfilles bring to mind a wickedly francophone Pixies. However, blasting through the 90s jangle of their debut full-length are nuggets of Nuggets-style psych-fuzz, and it’s as much classic rock as it is Come On Pilgrim. From the downcast drift of “Tes Yeux” to the ghostly ringing chords of “Mercredi”, there’s a wealth of melody crammed into these 11 songs, all clocking in at less than four minutes. Even if your understanding of french is as embarrassingly lacking as mine, Une Belle Table will speak to you in the international language of riffs.

Departures :: The Ugly Ducklings – Nothin’ b/w I Can Tell

The Ugly Ducklings
Nothin’ b/w I Can Tell
(Yorktown Records)
Toronto, ON
Originally Released: 1966

From the null set of Aaron Levin:
Thee quintessential garage-punk single. Much has already been written about this snarly five-piece from the centre of the world, so I’ll let the wild guitar tones and hurling vocals do the screaming. Aspiring youngsters: take note. Black-label, silver-letter variant pictured above is the first pressing. Classic Yorktown colour-label indicates a 2nd pressing. Their LP Somewhere Outside is highly recommended. It really doesn’t get better than this.

New Canadiana :: Sans AIDS // Lake Country – Sans AIDS / Lake Country Split Tape

Sans AIDS // Lake Country
Sans AIDS / Lake Country Split Tape
(Fan Club Music Club)
Edmonton, AB // Victoria, BC
::web/sounds:: // ::web/sounds::

From the northern lights of Aaron Levin:
For anyone unable to witness the pantheon of talent germinating within 2010 Alberta, the Sans AIDS // Lake Country split is prime listening. Edmonton’s drowned-out, heel-stomping bass-tone mastermind Sans AIDS fills 28 minutes of blistering summertime pop nostalgia; a sound I’ll forever associate with the year we all yelled “I Can’t Handle This.” On the flip-side, Medicine Hat, Alberta ex-pats Lake Country harvest their broiling garage-punk rural jams, a hallmark signal from the infamous Mt. Royal beast that wreaked havoc through Edmonton’s sinusoidal consciousness. Essential grippage.

New Canadiana :: Gold Zebra – Debut EP

Gold Zebra
Debut EP
(Self Released)
Montreal, PQ
::web/sounds::

From the plaster lights of Aaron Levin:
Categorical mellow-burner worth it for the aptly-named nine-minute arpeggiating shredder “Trans Desert.” Steady synth tones weave through the heavy drum machines to deliver an italo banger dripping in sleepless sex-talk. Julie’s strangely French-accented sexual whispers are uncomfortably addictive and work in tandem with the disco-desert theme to hasten the untimely arrival of our fluorescent future. Limited to 50 copies. Grip.
