Review :: Various Artists – Electric Voice Compilation

Various Artists
Electric Voice Compilation
(Electric Voice)
Truro, NS
::web/sounds::

From the electric voices of Aaron Levin:
Bibelots of this calibre are rarely offered; an insane compilation capturing the audible wasteland of free-pop/punk/form creativity fermenting within Nova Scotian borders; a continuous psychic narrative seizing the spirits of Canada’s most concentrated musical hive. Matt Samways has raised his golden conch, spreading his Electric Voice and summoning the fried minds of east Islanders everywhere. An exciting documentation of the current wave of fringe musics in Canada’s East and something we will marvel upon in our disparate future. In order of appearance: Veitam Vets, Omon Ra, Dog Day, Cold Warps, Bad Vibrations, Stolen Minks, Meat Curtains, The Ether, PIG, Mess Folk, Fuck Montreal, Duzheknew, Vacuum, Throbbing Organ, Milksnake, D’EON, We Need Secrets, Shinobi, Compostainer, Torso, DA/AD, Corner Organs off, Cheif Thundercloud, Microorgans, Omma Cobba and the Eastside Marijuana Band (!!), Dead Dog, The Friendly Dimension, Scribbler, and Fascism.

(short) Break for OBEY CONVENTION

Hey Everyone,

I’ll be heading out to Halifax to partake in the OBEY CONVENTION Mayhem occurring this weekend! Weird Canada will be hosting a BBQ in conjunction with the Campaign For Infinity showcase happening on Sunday afternoon. I’ll be bringing a box of over-priced Canadian 7″s to play to unsuspecting heads. Divorce Records mogul Darcy will be making burgers and doggles for you to eat. Haligonians: if you’re attending Obey, please stop by and say hi!

After I post up this compilation (see above), posts will resume on Tuesday. I wanted to get the Electric Voices Compilation review out because it’s face-melting and most of the musicians on the cassette are playing Obey. So, until then…

Review :: PS I Love You – Starfield

PS I Love You
Starfield
(Thing Itself)
Kingston, ON
::web/sounds::

From the starfield eyes of James Goddard:
There are two Kingston’s: One sanitized and sold – yours to discover. The home of Sir John A. Macdonald. The first capital of the Province of Canada. Regal, limestone buildings, and staid institutional stuff. Then there is the Kingston inhabited by PS I Love You. A heavy, hook-laden irresistibly catchy, summer-ripened forbidden fruit of a place. The two tracks on this 7″ are uncompromising displays of pop prowess beginning with Starfield, which maps the trajectory of a maybe romance, anchored in the middle by a censor baiting string of “fucks,” and followed by a b-side that dives head-first into a world where mundane obligations are subsumed by good times, distortion and unstoppable guitar tone.

Review :: Grand Trine // Black Feelings – Radio Frequency Identification b/w Magic Feeling

Grand Trine // Black Feelings
Radio Frequency Identification b/w Magic Feeling
(Blue Skies Turn Black)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds:: // ::web/sounds::

From the Black Magic frequencies of Jesse Locke:
Continuing in their 10th birthday brew-ha-ha, Montreal’s busiest promotion company and occasional record label has dropped this doozy of a 7” split. Grand Trine get the A-side with a fuzzy caveman rocker of Stoogian proportions, teeming with ‘tude, revved-up guitars and a middle section washout of snowstorm static (now the song title makes sense). On the flip, Black Feelings submit an underwater-fi take on the song they’ve been playing as a closer the last few times I’ve seen ‘em live, complete with stroboscopic rhythms and chiming guitars that ring out like steel drums. Still, when that triumphant riff kicks in for the first time at the 1:50 mark, life is a NES and you’re Kid Icarus.

Review :: PRADADA – Phantasy Visions

PRADADA
Phantasy Visions
(Hobo Cult Records)
Montreal, QC
::web/sounds::

From the phantastic visions of Aaron Levin:
Phantasy Visions commandeers the disturbed ritual-waves emanating from the depths of a cosmic jungle-vortex. Busted drums churn through a minor-key cult-fest that rivals The Pink Noise for its basement-macabre. PRADADA wins by reaching new levels of phantasmic antipathy within the layers of echo and destruction. A disturbing record not for the light of spirit and a certified contender for strangest album of the year. Forward all psychological damage claims to Hobo Cult mainstay Francesco de Gallo.

Review :: False Face – I Tried to Think Like Gaboury b/w Less Ambitious Man

False Face
I Tried to Think Like Gaboury b/w Less Ambitious Man
(Self Released)
Kingston, ON
::web/sounds::

From the less ambitious man that is Aaron Levin:
Kingston’s nihilist pop trio returns with another fantastic challenge to the art-rock consortium. Granulized beds of static carry their symphonic pop to unabridged heights, leaving the atonal guitar tomfoolery behind to deliver insane levels of cascading noise. They’ve once again skirted the unwieldily threat of identifiable genre and stayed true to their adjective hyperbole. Kingston, man!

Review :: Long, Long, Long – Long, Long, Long

Long, Long, Long
Long, Long, Long
(Self Released)
Halifax, NS
::web/sounds::

From the loins, loins, loins of Aaron Levin:
From the ashes of York Redoubt‘s blitzkrieg through Canada’s art-pop continuum, Long, Long, Long have emerged a deliciously sauteed phoenix. More ambitious, weird, angular, and, dare I say, funkier (maybe?) than York Redoubt, Long, Long, Long is a wild continuation of the brilliant stream of pop cognizance festering in Canada’s mathematical east. Long, Long, Long is a marvel of price-per-hook insanity and is brimming with narrative, noise, and every pop sensation known to humankind. I suggest you grip. NOW. A+++(infinity).

Review :: Solars – Mist

Solars
Mist
(Prairie Fire)
Vancouver, BC
::web/sounds::

From the misty fire of Aaron Levin:
Winnipeg’s Prairie Fire boldly capture Solars’ dronic embers on this fantastic voyage within the sublime realms of electronic nullism. Delicate, aquatic guitars hover above the pulsing washes of Mist‘s b-side, while “solder + sons” drills deep within our cosmic electrolytes. Stay for the full ride and bring your mind to pure psychic parity. Both tracks were recored live.

Review :: Radians – Iran b/w Bad People

Radians
Iran b/w Bad People
(Mammoth Cave)
Lethbridge, AB
::web/sounds::

From the double-down bass solos of Aaron Levin:
Mammoth Cave half-honcho Paul Lawton takes a sharp pirouette from the psy-fi garage-punk of his previous projects (Myelin Sheaths, Endangered Ape) and plunges into granular, anthemic pop with Radians. Both Iran, a certified hit with it’s canticlismic chanting and blown-out bass solo, and Bad People show a healthier side to Paul’s apocalyptic anchor; hiding beneath the layers of southern grizzle is the perfect pop outlet, and it’s finally landing on doorsteps care-of the Mammoth Cave. A++++ will bid again.

Review :: DUZHEKNEW / Cousins – DUZ/CUZ

DUZHEKNEW / Cousins
DUZ/CUZ
(Self-Released)
Halifax, NS
::web/sounds::

From the Dwindle Kindle of Jesse Locke:
With their 2010 split tour cassette, Halifax heartthrobs Duzheknew and Cousins carry on the Maritime tradition of sophisticated slacker rock (not an oxymoron). First up is Duz with an unlikely yet successful amalgamation of Spencer Krug warble, Abe Vigoda tropical punk and brainy Talking Heads pop. One to watch out for! Meanwhile, Cousins have dropped down to a duo since the release of their debut, turning up the spotlight on drummer-singer Aaron Mangle’s falsetto and knocking all three tunes out of the park. Sadly the first run of 100 is sold out, but look for a re-dub with fresh colour schemes just in time for Obey.
[Levin's Note: I tried to stop doing these "Levin's Notes" things, but I couldn't help it for this one. Been waiting for anything DUZHEKNEW related for way too long. This cassette slays!!]
