Review :: False Face – No Business / One Man Clapping

False Face
No Business / One Man Clapping
(Self Released)
Kingston, ON
::web/sounds::

From the I-assure-you-this-face-is-real face of Aaron Levin:
Literally out-of-nowhere mind-melding rock genre-fuckery of a very high calibre. False Face’s emergency-room resuscitation is thankfully limited to a two-track c10 so as to avoid the annihilation of your audible calibration. Atonal guitar freak-outs, droning doom breakdowns, and No Ageian walls of popular-noise are served beneath the covers of cafe-fresh vocal hooks and crunchy drums that churn your pop-music vocabulary into a beautiful puree of adjective hyperbole. An (almost) unbelievable mixture of sounds with a foot in every scene, deep-fried to perfection. A huge thanks to Garrett from The Famines for foisting this on me. Who are these dudes?

    They play quite frequently in Kingston but, for some reason, I’ve never seen them myself. I know one of the guitarists is in PS I Love You (recently listed as best new music for their split 7″ – very different style) and was in the (now defunct?)awesome dance-y party band Magic Jordan.

    More music can be found on their site.

    It’s the drummer that’s the guitar player from PS I Love You, then there two guitar players and one enormous beard. The beard is responsible for the “droning doom breakdowns”.

    The Famines have had the pleasure to play with these guys twice. I think the sonic quality of these recordings fully represents the live dynamic this band maintains. I am really excited to hear the 7″. Word on the street is they are sending some to me soon and there’s one with your name on it Aaron!

    The beard is responsible for many breakdowns.

    Thanks A/C – my mistake. Drummer not guitarist. And I noticed that most of the links on the concessionstreet site were dead. All ’round comment fail on my part.

    i remember seeing these guys at (i think) one of their first shows and being completely freaked out/blown away. for a minute they’d sound like pavement, and as soon as i’d start to get comfortable they’d blow it up into sheets of noise. the next time i saw them, they sounded entirely different, played all new tracks, and were still awesome.
