Grand Trine / Holy Cobras
Grand Trine / Holy Cobras Split Cassette
(Bruised Tongue)
Montreal, Quebec / Ottawa, Ontario
::web/sounds::

It’s my first time in Montreal and I decide to see AIDS Wolf in their native environment. I spent no longer than thirty-seconds in the venue before my friend Graeme forces me to purchase this split cassette; it’s practically sold out, bra, grip it! There is no preparation for the genre-mashing, sans-wave psychedelia pulsating through Grand Trine‘s side of the magnetic strip. RFID provides the hard-psych soundtrack to an apocalyptic car manufacturing plant, whereas Monochromatic Youth is a brilliant weird-punk interpretation of the 80s minimal synth scene. Grand Trine finish their side with Diamond Body Sunrise; a fuzz-drenched Montreal sound-scape of Red Crayola calibre. Ottawa, Ontario is the unlikely mother of Holy Cobras‘ 13-minute sound-collage-turned-distortion-freak-out. Unfortunately it does not reach the peaks that Grand Trine do. However, they provide a nice counterbalance to Grand Trine’s mental abandonment. Both sides are highly recommended.

The Bummers
The Bummers’ BBQ
(Self Released)
Edmonton, Alberta / Vancouver, BC
::web/sounds::
|
Now-legendary Edmonton duo whose fame exploded when the vocalist left for sunny BC. The misconception is that they’ve broken up; much like the anxious teenage-flirtations that pepper their lyrics, The Bummers are on-again whenever geography permits. There is a clear Beat Happening comparison, but it’s really redundant to state. Their songs are so lost-in-time that only the isolated and northernly regions of Edmonton, Alberta could yield such a dated-but-refreshing result. Songs like Zero Girlfriends and Physics for Poets are the finest examples of minimalism outside of Philip Glass and Lamonte Young. There isn’t enough room on the internet to gush about their songs.

Silly Kissers
Love Tsunami
(Self Released)
Montreal, Quebec

Someone bought a ticket to London, 1985. The Montreal duo walked into Human League’s studio and downloaded Philip Oakley’s soul into Garage Band. Infectious synth-pop of the highest retro variety. While many throw-back groups suffer from sounding stale and “modern,” I get a complete vintage vibe from this band that goes beyond audio and into the writing, phrasing, and sexualizing. I have on idea what they sound like live, but the 12-song CDR released in late-2008 is a pop sensation. Sean Nicholas Savage sings on a few songs.

Makeout Videotape
Heat Wave!
(Self Released)
Vancouver, British Columbia
::web/sounds::
|
The first demos by Makeout Videotape had this heavy cassette-warble from the red-line recordings made directly to cassette. Add the immensely catchy lyrics about typical girl bullshit and I was completely won over. I eagerly awaited his official released and was initially disappointed to see all new songs. The waves of distortion washed over me and my opinions were born anew in the wasteland of teenage sexual tension and Nilson covers. It wasn’t long before I was, once again, thwarting the recordings on all my friends and hassling the Edmonton ex-pat for more.

Feral Children
Hits and Improv
(Self Released)
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Viewing the Feral Children spectacle is a truly singular experience; emotional bellowing from the bottoms of a psychedelic vortex. Creating detailed lysergic textures on the fly with the usage of a looping pedal and sampler whilst strumming his uniquely tuned, de-strung guitar. This album got heavy play while I was finishing my thesis, putting out a record, and working full-time. I managed to avoid dropping acid but the album was a certified trip each time I took a break from hell to listen. Highly recommended. A top release from 2008.

Sean Nicholas Savage
Summer 5000
(Self Released)
Montreal, Quebec

Legend has it Sean once performed naked, painted entirely blue to a room full of underage women. I say legend because it’s so damn fitting. Cementing himself on the CJSR Top 30 for almost 5 months (spending two months at number one), it was no doubt that his perfect DIY pop effort resonated with all; young and old; naked and clothed; 16 year-old high-school girl and 27 year-old burn-out Music Director. The 8-song, 20 minute album was rereleased on Arbutus Records when Sean left the prairies for a life in Montreal. All the songs were recorded by Sean directly to an MP3 recorded using a process I still do not understand. He wrote a lot of songs. A lot. And many of them are great. Many of them.
